My watches on ebay and why I have done it!!

Post22 Feb 2007, 15:46

Dear collecting chums, Ive come into some criticism today from two led watch dealers for listing fifty commodore led watches on ebay all in one go and so I thought I would put into the open forum the reasons behind my decision to do this.

They say that this is foolish of me because I am ruining the mystique and rarity of leds.

I say rubbish , have you seen the pathetic price of vintage leds lately.

A few years ago there were lots more collector willing to buy led watches but this has dwindled over time. What we need is some heavy duty advertising, my main target market is the forty something guys who see leds and remember them from their youth. These guys aren’t going to suddenly remember led watches and go looking on ebay for them.

For this reason Ive listed a bulk purchase on the home page featured, now I don’t actually want to sell these IN BULK, but I do want to sell them individually in my shop, Ive done this purely for advertising, it cost £50 ($95) to use the featured and its got to be the cheapest advertising in the world, people trawl the 150 or so items on ebays home page when they are bored, a good amount of these will see the leds and then think, hey I remember those.

Im hoping we may get a few more collectors on the scene.

So far from trying to ruin the led market, this is an experiment to see if I can stir up a few more collectors, which will be an advantage to us all. Lets face it, at the moment you can buy a thirty year old led watch on ebay for about £15 ($30), that’s rubbish !! It costs me three times that much to fill my car with petrol, vintage prices have been hurt by all the new leds coming onto the market, people buy them and most are such junk that they never buy another led.

So far 330 people have viewed my eBay listing in less than two days, which has driven 66 people into my shop to see the individual watches, that’s a good result for led collectors everywhere because its raising the awareness of vintage led watches. In a week that listing will be right in the middle of the ebay.co.uk home page and visited by hundreds more people. I don’t want to sell those, they are purely for advertising, I want to raise awareness and bring in lots more interested people.

Sellers need not worry, I will not keep banging on if the experiment does not work, but Worldwide there are less than a couple of hundred ‘active’ led collectors and I think that anything we can do to improve on this the better, new leds have seriously knocked our marketplace and the value of our collections, we need more collectors – hundreds more – they are all out there, they had led watches in the 70’s we just need to remind them about the leds they had when they were young.

Your constructive comments good or bad would be valuable to me.

Phil

Phil:

I thought the watches were well price and I agree we need more collectors. Treat the new collectors fairly I say. Those $30 watches on ebay? I'm of the strongly held opinion THOSE should never be sold to a newbie - one dead watch, one problem piece, and we've lost them forever. :(

I hope we have more than "a few hundred collectors", what with the various lurkers and guys who only buy one a year. You keep "banging on" - here's to your success!! 8)

A little background before I make my point about Phil's LED selling strategy.

As my user ID hints I am a "Collector" of many "things". My wife is also a "Collector" of many things. Among the items I collect are LED watches, but only in great condition / working order. I purchase approximately 10 -15 per year depending on my whims. After a while, I either tire of a particular model or grow to "hate" some. (For example tired of some of my Witts, TI's, Benrus and Novus LED watches and hated some of the new LED's I bought, specifically Fossil and Adidas. Point of this is that I constanly rotate my collection and really on keep / hold onto only what I reall really like. I resell what I do not like on ebay.

I also "Rotate" other things I collect; Bulova Space Views, Fountain Pens, Ballpoint pens, Rocket Banks, Transistor radios, pocket knives, bakelite items, etc etc. My wife also rotates the items she collects (believe me there are many) on eBay.

What we have found is that many / most of the items we have collected over the last 35+ years (I am 60 years old) have in large part appreciated in value. Some have not and that is okay too as WE DO NOT COLLECT ITEMS FOR INVESTMENT PURPOSES. We collect because we enjoy.

But, as I mentioned, we constanly rotate our items using the $ from what we sell to add new or upgrade items. What I have seen with LED values is a downwood trend (not talking about the really true LED collectables). For example several years ago a nice (not outstanding) condition Witt would realize $300-400 US on eBay, now the same watch would be lucky to realize half that on eBay. Bottom line even though I do not collect LED's as an investment, I would like there values to at least remain constant to help with my rotation fixtation.

Which leads me to totally agreeing with the points / strategy Phil has made - most of those who want a vintage LED watch have accquired one. The "collector" base has not grown in relationship to the suppy of LED's, both vintage and new, now available on eBay.

I personally feel some "BUZZ" is required to accquire new VINTAGE LED "collectors". Phils strategy is a good start - Ed's work with his web site(s) is also GREAT. Also, totally agree with Ed on two points;

1. If a new collector is "scr----" on their first purchase of a vintage LED watch they will assume all vintage LED watches are trash and will not come back. Those that knowingly sell vintage crap as "good' items are doing all of us a dis-service.
2. Most and I say most new LED's are of poor quality and probabbly do not "turn on" the majority of the younger folks (18 - 35). Yes, a lot of what is available is 'cheap / affordable" but they will not make future collectors. Nor will they drive these folks to vintage LED's. Also, those in this age bracket mostly use other devices to tell time. HOWEVER, some (and there are a LOT) of the real yuppies in this age bracket will ALSO buy watches to "wear and show off" but they are looking for "upper end" stuff not $100 me too watches. I know this for fact based on talking to a lot of my 25 - 30 year old daughters friends. They do show off their Seiko's, Breitlings, Rolex's etc as they feel they are unique. When I refer to a "Fossil" type LED watch they laugh and say never. When I show them one of my vintage LED's they say really nice - would't mind having one of them.

Which leads to my final point, if Phil, Ed, other's can tap into this market, the base of collectors will surely grow and we will all benefit!!!!

I agree with everything that's been said so far, and I have no problem with what Phil is doing; there's nothing wrong with making people aware of your product.

Thanks for the thumbs up so far, and for your comments, my stats for the first 48 hours are:

featured homepage advert, number of visits : 484
shop visits : 98
watches sold in shop : 2
bulk purchase (outside of ebay after enquiry from homepage listing : 5
Total sold : 7
Three enquiries, 2 for Pulsars, 1 for Omega. (visited my website after reading 'about me ' on ebay).

I will keep you posted as time goes on, but the hits look good and led awareness must be growing!
In the interests of good debate Im going to email the led traders who emailed me criticism and ask them to comment here to see the other side of the debate.

Hi Phil, why did you stop talking to me when I had the chance of a magazine feature? as you probably know the magazine I was offered an interview with sells around a million copies per year, and is aimed at the right group of people for LED watches :?

Hi Richard, I didnt stop talking to you, maybe thats the trouble with emails they can be mis-understood, I offered you a load of vintage to put in the article and you (appeared to ) answer that they were only interested in modern leds. If I got that wrong then I apologise....
