Outrageous Hamilton QED?

Post09 Jan 2010, 19:21

Ok, maybe this is a silly question, but I was curious about the rationale behind the value of this non-working Hamilton QED which is currently up to almost a grand on the bay:
http://iphone.ebay.com/Pages/ViewItem.a ... ff&sflag=1

Yes, the case is in very nice condition (although it's hard to tell precisely with flattering incandescent lighting), and I have seen circumstances where pieces in exceptional condition command prices way above the norm, but is that the case here? How much of the price inflation is due to condition and how much is due to psychology / eBay fever.

Just out of curiosity, what would you say this piece is really "worth"? Any guesses?

I'm guessing this is a case of shill bidding as all biddign beyond $135 has been with a "0" feedback bidder and one with only 64 feedback(possibly a secondary ID of the seller, who has fairly low numbers themselves). $135 is fairly generous for a QED that isnj't currently working; although, the current module might be repairable. Might.

I can sell you a really minty one, fully working, for $500 without a box, $550 with. :o

So funny. I was coming here to post the same thing. This is shill bidding all the way.

Then again, I'm still trying to figure this one out:

It's just a bunch of mediocre (at best) cases, with modules that probably don't work.

Isn't the oval watch a Jaeger Le Coultre Master Quartz LED model?- might explain the high bidding. JLC LED watches seem to be split between watches that are fully marked crystal & caseback and those that are only foiled on the crystal with the plain SS back marked 10K GFD bezel & serial number.

Not a bad deal:: the last Jaeger Le Coultre sold for $570 (although it was in better condition) item number 140368713474 :: they use a 29mm Hughes module so finding a replacement is not too difficult.
