Citizen 9011 polarizing sheets needed

Post14 Dec 2013, 20:47

For two citizen 9011's im in need of polarizing sheets without wear, or with minor wear.

The sheets in these movements tend to suffer from wear, they are attached on top of the lcd panel and are not part of the panel itself. Both my movements are 100% functional.

If you have a defective movement (battery leakage, broken lcd panel etc) with good sheets im very interested!

Why don't you replace the film yourself?

Hello Seiko Kid,
I have taken a LOT of time finding a good polarizing filter. Eventually I found some 'second best' film: a bit too thick, and not transparent enough (has a dark grey appearance)
If im unable to replace the film by a donor, I will eventually replace by using the film I already have.

are you aware that polarising film has an adhesive back and once removed it cannot be used again? Just asking as I may have misunderstood your post ?

Hi Seiko Kid,
These 9011 movements have a separate polarizing filter (on the top side); they are a separate part of the movement. Later similar to 9011 movements had both filters attached on the lcd panel.
This way its easy to replace, if I have an original similar one.
If im unable to locate one I will have to remove the glue on my spare filter sheet (by dipping it in alcohol for an hour or two), make it match the original size, perforate a few holes for the attaching etc.
But I prefer the original part/sheet in good shape, especially for the colour tone.

Edit:

heres a picture of the second movement for which im in need of a filter. You can see clearly how the polarizing filter is layed on top of the lcd panel:

aha, I understand you now

what would be the issue if you did use a sticky back filter? I know it would not be stock but would that really matter?

I prefer the original parts.
I don't have spare (defective) lcd 9011 panels to remove the back sheet. But if I would, I think the size would have been too small to make a fully covering panel on the front side. Beside this (if I understand you well); when removing sticky polarizing sheets in general, they tend to curl when removing.
But if im unable to locate one I will make one myself. If so, I will update a final result here.
Thanks for thinking with me, have a good saturday

hmm, I suppose that depends on the way you remove the filter....

also the angle of the rear filter is likely to be different than the front, thus giving you a darker or lighter display - with the watches I've delt with ( mainly Seiko but a few other brakes too ) the LCD print is usually on the rear of the LCD and when you remove the rear filter it pulls off the print

however I don't really deal with many citizen so everything I know could count for nothing :)

That's why the back panel sheet wont fit the front side of the display ;)

I will wait a while and hope to find an original sheet

As its a 74-75 model its also quite early in the learning curve of the technology, so all bets are off on the processes they used(whether it be Seiko or Citizen or Casio). Be careful with alcohol it can have a bad effect on some plastics, causing a crystalizing effect. I try to use heat to soften adhesive if I can, especially if I cant replace the part.

If you don't find an original polarizer, see if you can find one of these National Semiconductor watches:

Non-workers sell as low as 2-3$ and the polarizer is big enough for the 9011 module. I've used them successfully on one of my modules already. They are tinted very slightly grey, but it's only visible in direct comparison and on the plus side, they are more contrasty than the original polarizers.
The 3rd Citizen on this picture uses polarizers from an NSC donor:

Hi Adam,

thanks. I'll see if I can find some time to take some decent pictures soon. Don't hold your breath, though. I'm rather busy most of the time.
