Seiko 0124a; newton ring; setting spring help

Post07 Feb 2014, 02:53

Hello all,

Looking for some help with a very used 0124a.

1. The stem setting spring has broken, a common problem. So I am looking for a new or used spring or a source. julesBorel website is down so I don't know if they have one. Maybe there is a spare out in DWF land?

2. The LCD panel has a dark newton ring dead center. This is a dark spot surrounded by alternating iridescent to dark rings. So a question first, is the ring caused be the polarizer films decaying and interfering or is it part of the LCD panel. If the panel, anyone know who may have a spare new or good old one? If the polarizer film, are there two films, one on each side and what is the best method for removing? What is the best source for replacement?

3. The circuit works.

4. The crystal needs a good polish. I just picked up a glass polishing kit with pads and polish. Says it is for light to medium scratches so I will report on the system works.

So in a nutshell, help please? :-P

Cheers, Geoff

Re: Seiko 0124a newton ring and polarizer film

Thanks Kasper!

Do you know if the 'newton Ring' (iridescent concentric alternating dark/light bands) are repairable by replacing the polarizer film. The repair manuals mention the effect but only talk of LCD replacement.

Cheers

it's difficult to say...i had watches where i just need to change the polarizer and other that had the problem in the glass lcd itself.

Peel of the first polariser and check then the back and check :-D

after a long search i found an old posting of me...new polarisers but no avail..the problem was the display itself.

i always start with the top polarizer cause thats the one getting the first uv in the watch. But as you can see below..it,s not always the polarizer. It,s also possible that there
is a problem with the lcd self.

here i wanted darker digits and another background.
i cut another (gold) background, then got rid of the top polarizer and noticed that it didn't make that much difference, so i also changed the back polarizer but still no avail.

then i checked the lcd and now you can easy see that there is a problem with the lcd itself...don't ask me why. I think that the polarizer burned in the glassplate :?: :!: from lying in the sun.

and don't forget, polarizers have to be in an angle of 90 degrees of each other to have the best effect!

The setting spring is different on the 0019, 0030, 0049 -which do you have?

The issue you are having with your LCD is unrepairable. Potentially able to decrease the effect by a new polariser but don't hold your breath. Usually its the back one that is damaged aswell, this can be replaced but at the cost of loosing the printed details that you see on the LCD panel

My mistake, was up 34 hours straight on a flight from Sydney when I posted.. Guess the bourbon at this end didn't help either!

Was thinking of posting about my brand new S770-0A80 and got mixed up.
