What to do - item shipped in an envelope?!

Post22 Jan 2009, 00:07

I have a dillema - guy who has been a good customer buys a Citizen Round LCD calc. off me. He writes me the day he receives it and says it won't set. I figure he just doesn't understand the directions, tell him to send back. Despite me shipping it in a triple-walled cardboard box, wrapped in bubble wrap, he sticks the plastic box into a (thin)Tyvek envelope and mails it by regular mail. The box is cracked badly, top completely crunched off and the seconds have lost digits. I've had it completely apart, cleaned the zebra strips(twice), still f'd. I'm thinking of telling him "too bad", considering how poorly he wrapped it for shipping. Thoughts, suggestion would be appreciated.

Take a picture of it with the packing and politely explain that as he's not properly protected the watch this has happened. There’s not really any more you can do I don’t think.

yeah, sucks...we had a beautiful thing going business-wise. I just don't understand someone sticking a $1100 watch into essentially a cloth bag and sticking it into the mail.

Yikes an $1100 watch gone to waste, I would be gutted if it where mine, although I would of wrapped it up in several layers of bubble wrap, boxed it and sealed it with the up-most of care, I would of then worried, slept less and perspired more until I got notification that it had arrived safely at its intended destination - I would then repeat this process for the duration of the watches return journey ~:(

Just a thought, could it be possible his wife or some other third party posted it on his behalf and he is unaware that it was wrapped so poorly? I can just imagine asking my own wife and her saying "oh that old thing, I just chucked it in an envelope"

Would it be possible to make a claim against the postal services for the damage?
You could offer to endorse the claim by stating the watch was damaged in transit, he may appreciate the gesture if nothing else.

Well, not a complete waste - it works fine, save for one missing segment in far right seconds column. He mailed it himself - claimed he was in hurry and they had no boxes or bubble wrap for sale t the post office. I mainly wanted some comfirmation that I wasn't being a weiner for not feeling terribly responsible for it's function, since so little care was given. Bucko - you've bougth off me, I think you'd agree I am pretty much the ultimate paranoid packer?

Yes it is true I always sweat less waiting for one of your watches to arrive

I worry about bored postal or customs staff playing cricket or frisbee with the packages and parcels. I think it makes sense to be cautious.

The responsibility must be with the sender so IMO no, you are not being a weiner :!:
