There was no way I was going to avoid being a watchnerd. I blame Herbert White. He was the jeweller in Frome, the town where I grew up in the 1970s/1980s. He was a wonderful chap, and was very happy indeed to be regaled with endless questions about watches by a young lad.
He was a lovely bloke - his son ran the shop most of the time, but Herbert would usually be around somewhere. He and I used to sing together in the local parish choir. He was an absolutely awesome tenor in his seventies, goodness knows how good he was in his prime. I would have guessed choosing the family business over a singing career was a tough call.
I remember he lent me a workshop service manual for one of the new digital LED watches that was just out - the massive two-cell, magnet-in-clasp-to-adjust Omega Time Computer 1. It had me absolutely captivated. I’ve got a bit of a guilty secret for quartz still... So I thought I'd pop in here.
The current collection isn't massive - as yet - although growing by the day. Mostly Seiko and Citizen from the 1980s. Here's one as a starter:
