Casiotron 04-507

Post20 Sep 2013, 19:13

Hey all,

Recently found a 1975 Casiotron 04-507 for restoration I am working on today.

It has a very interesting movement of a kind I haven't seen with Casio before: Two circuits (just time and date!), each with their own cmos ; both circuits interlinked by the plastic interlink strips we now know so well from the insides of our computers, phones etc. It also has a very sophisticated way of connecting lcd panel to circuit I never saw before on any digital but the Seiko 0114/0124.
I think this is one of the Casiotrons that truly deserves the name 'time computer' as casio used in those days :-)

Anyway, the movement looks clean, no marks of battery leaking damage so I will have to test all parts separately.
Before I do this id like to have a picture of a similar movement. The 04-507 movement is probably (partly) soldered manually and I notice some rough soldering on the topside of the movement (right circuit in the picture). Id like to know if this is the original layout or that it has been tempered with in the past.
Also I would be interested in any info on the xtal, anyone knows the rate of the xtal in this movement?

Thanks in advance and have a good weekend!

Hi seicitizitch.
quietman did a writeup about reviving one of these a while ago. He replaced the flexible conductive strip with wires. Here it is:

Should give you some good ideas I think.

Hi, thanks for your reply.
I came to another solution;
I replaced the blub holding the conductive strip in place with some of the conducticve strip (lcd panel to circuit) I have from old demolished digitals to hold it down. Perfect material as its made to keep its flexibility for ages. I placed this below the metal plate holders. Works as a charm.
I also cleaned the movement and all its contact making points (glassfiber pencil, mild contact spray applied with brush etc)
Right now im just attaching the funky bracelet again.
I can welcome my oldest working Casiotron to its other family members :)
I will post a picture tomorrow, its way past bedtime now and I will hop in my dream machine ;*

Edit:
In the picture below you can see the grey blub, extremely sticky, nasty stuff. But with some toothpicks and the help of alcohol I was able to clean both sides. I think the reason for the watch malfunctioning is that the blub lost its functionality, together with some light corrosion of all the contacts around the movement

That was good thinking and well executed. Nice watch and great shot. :dwf:

well done!!! i love these early casiotron.... :grin1: :grin1: :grin1: :grin1:
Some watches are made to last only as long as they are fashionable
Some watches, simply are not made to last
Seiko watches are designed to withstand the ravages of both time and fashion
Someday perhaps, all watches will be made this way
