Ancient Orient LCD

Post09 May 2014, 21:11

I got this one because it looked very old, big case, only two recessed buttons and a "time only" display.
Seller said "display is on, time not advancing".

Nice big watch :)

There's the problem, the thingy the setting button presses against is broken off!

Sticky goo on the ceramic circuit.
Image

Minus terminal almost corroded away, even a track disconnected on the right of the pad.

I did some cleaning, some work with a circuit pen, and I discovered the quartz crystal was dodgy.
I ended up with this.

And it works :)

I really like the looks, especially the way the digits are made.

Proof that these watches were not meant to be disposable, look at those solder points and general robust construction!!

Great photos too dutchsiberia, amazing work bringing a classic back to life like that.

It's worth mentioning here that static electricity can kill LCD watches just as dead as LED ones, but that usually happens during a battery change, when the contacts are exposed and a potential can be created across them that exceeds the breakdown voltage of the electronics (typically 10-20 volts). A typical finger-stinging doorknob-zap involves the discharge of several thousand volts, so you'd never notice if you were carrying a static charge of only a few 10s of V. If this worked after the batteries were initially installed, my best guess would be, that the quartz crystal has, for whatever reason, failed. That would be the first repair I'd try now.

I'll try the suggestions :) I'm hoping the new quartz crystal I used is a faulty one...
