Handok dot - matrix - display - system

Post25 Nov 2011, 21:28

this was the original picture when buying the watch.

Image

when you look at the seven..you see there is a problem in the silver background plate...this indicates that there is a battery leakage.

so first things first..let's open it en check it

Image

as you could see..the backside is wet..so we have a little battery leakage

Image
Image

it's hard to see in the above pictures but the silver background plate was in bad shape due to corrosion.

so..time for a nice make-over :-D

you could try silver pen or a gold pen..but it will not work..so the closed
that i could think of was silver and gold wrappingtape.
So i taped a new silver layer over the background plexi plate.

Image

it's very clean and shining again now...not as bright as the original...but i still haven't found strong thin seetrough plexi so i could tape that.
The disadvantage of the tape is that the light is not that bright.

sorry, it's very hard to take a picture of a mirrored watch :-D

Ed will put a small movie up that i made.

bottom line : nice watch but bad quality. The module is the same as all the others i think...scrolling date...choose between 5 languages, light, and the text is scrolling ones every hour.
edit: just noticed when you hold the mode date button..the text keep scrolling between time and date...nice.

Nice work Kasper.
That's quite an unusual model I haven't seen before.
Kwonbax keeps coming up with interesting digitals in pretty good nic. His photographic technique/ploy of always using the cane/seagrass background is really effective too. You immediately know it's one of his auctions !

An alternative to your method is to take the mirror plate from a donor watch, and cut/file it to size. I've done this a few times, and it's surprisingly easy to do. If you can get an oversize mirror, just cut it to size with a stanley knife and file the corners if required. About 10 minutes, total.

Rgds.

Interesting find Kasper and good job on the repair. When do you think it was manufactured?

When I looked at this for the first time I thought it was a rebranded Seiko D031- however the circuit board is definitely not Seiko quality, just a pretty much exact copy. Does it do the D031 trick of the rolling display if you press the upper right button for more than 2 seconds? (conversely does it show all the dots if you press and hold the light button for more than two seconds?).

it's not good quality, look like a cheap casio.

the scrolling works only pressing right-up button for more then 2 sec...no showing of dots pressing the light button...btw i never saw that in another...looks strange cause you have to be quick then to see the time in the night :-D

@charger ..i tried first to find a donor plate but this one is really a very light grey ..and all the others i have were darker.

but i have to find another solution cause i cannot see the hour at night..to dark..the extra tape layer is just to much i think..i have to try it again with just a clean transparent plexi glass.

dating the watch...i have no idea..google is not my friend for Handok :-)

edit : @ old Tom ...the full dot display works as i push the set-select button for 2 sec

Image

manufacture date is around 1980.

edit: found a better strap...seiko strap..looking much better now.
