Novus calculator watch

Hi, my first post.
I've spoken to a few members privately, but been too shy to post publicly until now, so I'm hoping to get some help with my watch.
I recently purchased a lovely Novus scientific calculator watch from a reputable dealer, who assured me that it was fully working, and just to be clear, I have absolutely no doubt that it was working before it got to me. However, I've inserted 2 new batteries, and I get a stagnant display of dots and 8's. The display looks like this: ".8.8.8.8.8.8"
I'm a complete novice regarding LCD watches, so I'm not sure if this is normal, and if I need to do something special to get rid of this stagnant display, or if this is a more serious issue.
Is there anyone who can advise me on what to do? Please.

Hi. If it's like the one in my avatar then the 8888888 is just the start up mode. If you press the button marked "watch" then it will go into time and date mode. Then you'll need to set it (the instructions for this are on the inside of the keyboard cover but it still takes a bit of figuring out). If it's not the same then perhaps a picture or a model number might get you some help?

Thank you Digibloke, yes it is the same flip-top style as yours.
I suppose it is the "watch" button that's not working then, because nothing happens when I press it. I've tried removing and reinserting the cells, but the 8's return and nothing happens when I press any of the buttons.
I'll post some photos of it tomorrow, and hopefully you, or somebody else can suggest something that I can try to get the watch into time/date mode.

That, my friend, is a GFW (Great Fuckin Watch)

Many LCD's need an "ac" before they start working again. For excample, this week i got a NOS Casio World time for a few dollars, non working. The previous owner obviously didnt know she had to AC the movement after replacing the battery; came in dead, also with a replaced batery, after "ac-ing" it, it came allive as usual.

You might find an open spot on the movement (where the pcb is visible with a small copper dot). Attach the batteries and use a tweezer to "ac' it, one end on the ac spot, one end on the case or a metal part of the movement.

These use 2 x 357 cells. I've had 2 of these - a Novus and an NSC and they both gobbled up the batteries in about 4 to 6 months.
There isn't a place on the watch to short the batteries to the movement (AC?) and it always comes up with the display all on with dots and 8's on start up to show all segments working. It does sound as though your keyboard isn't working as it should - do the side buttons (date and backlight) do anything at all?

Thanks seicitizitch You're right, it really is a very nice watch, and I'm very happy with it. It just sucks that I can't get it to work.
I actually do have an original bracelet for the watch. I've attached a photo with it on.
I'm going to assume that Digibloke is right on this one, and that the watch doesn't have a place to "AC" it. That's unfortunate.
Someone else has made a suggestion to remove the module and try running it outside the case. I think I'll give that a go tomorrow. Any advice for removing the module is appreciated.

Thanks Digibloke for your advice again. Okay, so I have been using 357's. The side buttons don't do anything while the "8" display is on.
Do you think it's a good idea to try running the module outside of the case?

Still open to any other suggestions please...

It's a little strange that the light (right hand side button) isn't working at all. It should work even with the watch in start up mode. I seem to remember Rewolf (member here and on a few other digital watch sites) taking one of these apart ages ago - might be worth sending him a PM? Otherwise Peter Wenzig at magic digitals is probably worth a try for help.

Hello everyone.
Please help.I also have the same watch and was wondering if anyone has the setting instructions.It does display the time-hours, minutes and seconds-but I don't know how to set it to my local time.Iv'e already contacted Peter but he doesn't seem to know.

Hi - I cant remember for sure but I think that you press the + key to get the hours to display in setting mode then type in the correct time for your time zone (just the hours - the minutes stay the same). Then I think it's the = key to save and reset seconds to zero. If that doesnt work then try some other keys to save - you'll get there eventually.

Thank you very much for your help.That was easy.For example,for the Month, push and release the RCL button,push 10 (1 then 0) for October and then push =.The same setting for the rest of the functions listed on the flap.

I want one!, I have 4 Casio 200 scientific but have always wanted the Novus as the case is stainless and not chromed pot metal.

Oops, did some research, the back is stainless, the rest of the case is plated. Nice job and GFW!
