i need to find a way to get the scratches out of the glass of seiko nr 3...these scratches are located in between the dots that are sitting higher..so not that easy.

The handok just left me out in the blue...suddenly stopt working..still have no idea why. :-(

LOL, you're getting quite a nice selection of those Seiko's Kasper, they all look great.

One thing I've always enjoyed with Seiko's is they seem to like to experiment with displays frequently. This is one of my grail watches that I finally hunted down, unfortunately Seiko was unable to make the display work again, as the material ages it also fades. It's a very white background with very blue ink like digits when it was working.

It's a 1982 F623 using an Electrochromic display, and it's only about 2mm thick in the case!!. A precurser to the E-ink display you see Seiko selling in a watch today.

I also have an NOS one here Kasper. They arent repairable. They just fade away. Mine is possibly still working, I thought I saw movement from a certain angle.

did someone ever try to give it a but more voltage to see what the results are?

Twisted nematic displays contain liquid crystals that twist and untwist at varying degrees to allow light to pass through. When no voltage is applied to a TN liquid crystal cell, polarized light passes through the 90-degrees twisted LC layer. In proportion to the voltage applied, the liquid crystals untwist changing the polarization and blocking the light's path. By properly adjusting the level of the voltage almost any gray level or transmission can be achieved.

i'm still trying to figure out why some lcd suddenly stop working like my Handok dot matrix above

Have you tried heating it a little to see if it gives some life. It also depends if the board has ever been cleaned and with what.

DWL is unfortunately correct. Our watches were made with a display that uses an oxidizing and reduction to make the color change. And I guess it can only do that for so long, but it would be great if there was a way to recharge and get these working properly. I had the battery removed from my watch, but when it had the battery, it showed signs of life like DWF's photo, I could even see it trying to give a running seconds display when pressing one of the buttons.

I had sent my watch in to COSERV here in the US, but they contacted Seiko Japan and European Seiko repair facilities to try and locate a working display for me to no avail. It was a nice try though, but would be really great if there was a way to rejuvinate the display somehow. Seiko sent me the full techical repair manual for this watch as well.

Below is info on the Tungsten Trioxide and how it was used in our F623's. If there's a chance to get these working again, I'd gladly donate my example to see if anything could be done to get it working again.

My apolgies Kasper, I didn't mean to hijack your thread and change the subject, this watch is just one of those things I wish could be brought back from the dead, they are pretty rare apparently, but also all known examples have dead displays.

LOL, you got me doing more research now on this. :)

I'm wondering if this Electrochromic material might be reversible. Because going from the description in my Seiko tech manual for this watch the material gains and loses electrons when electrical potentials are applied to it. So, if a single current could be generated on the diodes over a period of time, they might bake off the accumulated stuff and allow the material to change like it was supposed to. Maybe.. Hopefully.. lol

I found a nice 1993 video on these Electrochromics to help explain what's going on and to give us some ideas.
http://wwwf.imperial.ac.uk/imedia/content/view/559/electrochromic-displays/

This might be a task, but I'm thinking of just photocopying my Seiko F623 Tech manual and uploading it, it might be useful if we were to make an attempt to rejuvinate the display. The manual says that applying more than 1.5v will destroy the display on this watch by the way.

This could definately get interesting! I'm at the point where I know at least other members here have an example of the watch, in case mine is destroyed in the process, so maybe we should have a skilled member have the chance to make an attempt to get the display working correctly again. I don't really have much to lose at this point, and I'd feel better if we at least gave this a try, rather than having a dead watch with no hope of revival.

I just wish I could get in touch with Sharp, since they made the display for Seiko, it would be nice to chat with someone experienced with Electrochromics to see if this faded display is reversable.
