Bad title, post UK only, and end time in the morning, perfect

Now lets hope it works...

You were also helped by the seller blocking all none UK bids even after giving permission to bid on it. Meant my snipe didn't go in (which saved you a bob or two ;-) )

Congratulations with it - Looks like a beauty. Hope it just needs a decent battery.

Phew, sorry that you didn't get to bid, but can't say i'm not relieved as my snipe was considerably higher than the end price.

Which batteries do I need for it? Also does anyone have any idea what the original box would have looked like?

No problem - I've been spending way too much lately so perhaps a blessing in disguise if you're snipe was anything like mine :-)

These take a single 357. Careful not to scratch the case when you pop the battery hatch button off.

The box would have looked like this one on Ed's site:

http://thedigitalwatch.com/vintage-photos-pre-1995/led-a-f/avia/

I've had two DSMs in the past (down to one now) and they both came in these space aged steel boxes.

Let us know how it goes when it arrives eh?

Yeah will definately post in here how it goes, it's in the post but he sent it 2nd class so maybe it will arrive tomorrow, the wait is killing me!

Thanks for the link to the box, not looking likely I'll be able to find one of those so I'll just look for a nice generic Avia box on eBay.

It's alive! it's not good enough to use as a watch but the display is there with the watch shaded and viewed from an angle, but this is with a cheapo battery, will try later with a silver oxide battery, tried to get 12.08 but was too slow with the camera...

Congratulations Richard!!

Looks great too, the display doesn't seem to be misbehaving either, sometimes these watches can be a bit temperature dependent. The cooler it is, the display will show up fully, but once warmed up the digits start to fade on some. I don't quite understand why that is though.

Thanks :-) the display actually looks better in person than in that photo, if you look at it straight on and catch it so there's no light reflecting on the mirror surface the display looks perfect, but if there's any light reflecting (display looks like a mirror) then it's difficult to see. I hope my explanation makes sense.

That is a perfect description of a dynamic scattering display :grin1: There is nothing wrong with it at all, they do all look how you describe if they are in good shape, and they all tend to keep very good time.

Again, great catch, welcome to the Dynamic Scattering watch club. "willkommen"

Great photo! I know how difficult it is to get the digits to show up that clearly. After looking at your photo I have decided to wear mine today. :-D

It's just sat in normal daylight with a quick snap straight off the camera, I do have a piece of black card (A4 size) attached to the front of my camera though to stop reflections, so that probably helps.

Very nice watch, congratulations!
If you're using a "point-and-shoot" type camera, with built-in flash, you can try stick some opaque sticky-tape(sellotape?) directly over the flash, which acts as a type of diffuser, and stops the flash light falling directly onto your object.
If that cuts out too much light, experiment with using slightly more transparent paper over the flash. It'll help a bit with the blowout.
I hope that helps.

Thanks for the tips but I never use flash on watches it makes them look terrible, plus as i said I have a big piece of black card on the front of the camera, this covers the flash so I couldn't use it if I wanted to. The pic above was just snapped on the side with daylight, but for proper photos I use a small photo tent with daylight bulbs, much better than flash ;-)
