Help identifying LCD module

Post12 Sep 2013, 18:59

Hi all

Could any of you guys possibly help me identify this module?

ImageImage

The watch it's out of is branded IMEX and looks to be a cheapo brand. There are no identifying marks at all on the case and just the numbers shown on the module. It looks from the case that it displays Hours/Minutes and Month/Date. There are buttons at 2 o'clock and 4 o'clock and a setting button at 3 o'clock. I was hoping someone might know what it is and any other brands of watch it's used in so I can try and source a replacement.

Thanks

Is the module or watch NOT working?

"80.4" <<< Kind of looks like a Hughes number, but I know that it is not. Have you taken the 4x screws off, and looked in the underside? If the module is not defective and is working don't risk taking the the module apart unless you really know what you are doing, as it can be killed permanently.

"Old Tom" is your Man or perhaps "Kasper" who is somewhat of experts with LCD modules, but it does look like a cheepo sort like the NealSonic types that you get with the old 1978 type of $10.00 Thrifty bought LCD from that time period.

I hope someone sees this tread, and gives their input because I am curious as well :-).

not an easy one...but its a cheap hongkong module...i think around 1978

the closest i could find was a early lcd watch...there are many similar modules. i think you could even find it in a microma or a fairchild watch.
sorry, i could not find a similar module in my database.

Thanks for the replies.

No Patrick, the watch is not working, I'd never touch it if it was. It was bought as 'untested' so I wasn't too surprised, but I was hoping it might just need some contacts cleaning or something. Unfortunately, it requires a bit more than that. I have removed the plastic plate and the circuit board underneath is in a right mess. There looks to be some kind of black residue coating it and also a couple of small parts have detached from the board. It looks like it's been on fire  . It's getting a bit late now but I'll post a picture of it tomorrow.

Hi Kasper. The circuit board on mine looks completely different to that one, it's circular and covers virtually the whole of the module. Is it possible to replace one module with another in these LCD's if one could be found which fitted the case?

This is the watch the module came in:

And this is what the circuit looks like:

Don't know what the black stuff on the tracks is. What is the brown and silver rectangular thing just below right of the upper left screw hole? Two of those have detached from the board, one from the contacts on the far left; the other from I don't know where, but it looks like it may have come from those two on the far right. I don't have any experience with electronic watch circuits so I can't gauge just how bad this is, although it looks pretty bad to me. Do you think there's any chance at all of getting this to work again?

nope trow it in the bin, these are cheap chinese modules. I took a quick look in my leftovers and these are all the same style. You could buy these for 1$ in the beginning of the eighties as mass production started.
I didn't even looked at these when someone gave them to me. But i do love the funny names :-D
