Iranian Breitling 80970

Post29 Dec 2013, 14:06

I've been keeping an eye out for a non working one of these, since I really like them and I had a working movement to transplant. Anyway, this one came along a while back:

The observant amongst you may notice that the quartz crystal is actually missing from the movement. I did try re-installing one, but no good.
I gave everything a good clean, swapped the good movement into the case, attached a black leather Breitling band, and it's been humming along nicely for about a month now. It's been getting a lot of wrist time :mega:

The script on the dial is in Persian (Farsi), and I have found out is quite different to Arabic. The alphabet is the same (similar ?), but the language is different. I asked a guy who spoke Arabic at work, and he said it was just gibberish. I asked another Persian guy at work and he said it read as Hava Nirouz, which translates to Air Forces or Air Squad........which is what it is supposed to say !

The white circular graticule has mostly flaked off under the glass. I remember replacement glass floating around on Ebay a year or two ago, but not anymore. Has anyone got a lead on replacement glass ?
I'd also like to get a caseback wrench for it. This one has 14 edges, but all the ones I've seen have 15 edges. Anyone have any good ideas ?

Rgds,
Andrew.

Hi Charger, great watch, i too obtained an Iranian 2300 a few years back and like yours, mine was faulty (analogue part was fine, lcd did random things) i sent mine to Dr Peter Wenzig and he repaired it.I've seen Iraqi, Iranian and Saudi versions. Mine is one of the most comfortable watches i own and i wear it regularly. Regarding the caseback, i opened mine using one of the cheapo adjustable wrench spanners with the interchangeable heads .The set contains a pair of flats that should open it as long as it aint mega tight. Or you could try one of those ball openers maybe ?
I also have the later version, the 3300, that one was gifted by The Sultan of Oman and is new old stock. The caseback on the later model has holes in it so is easier to open. The Navitimers are all fab imo

Thanks gjelec.
Both your watches are of course superb. I'd like to get a bracelet for mine too, but they're very hard to find, and generally go for big bucks if one shows up. I'll make do with the leather strap for now.
I prefer the 2300 to the 3300 (and the other similar models). Not sure why, I just think it looks better.

I forgot to mention that the module I put in is the ESA 900.911 (not the 900.231). The 911 is the alarm version and the 231 is the chronograph version. Other than that, they are exactly the same.

The caseback was loose when it arrived, so I only need the wrench to tighten it right up. At the moment it's only finger tight.
I'll keep looking.
Rgds.
