ESA 942.711

Post23 Mar 2015, 11:06

I wonder if a fellow forum member has ever disassembled a ESA 942.711 and can share some insights. I have a non working Breitling version which has the Breitling logo stuck to the back of the module. I havent lifted my module out of the case yet but it looks like there is a front part and back part with the battery holder? I'm curious to know if there is any way I can keep the Breitling logo if I'm lucky enough to locate another 942.711? Eg can it be done by swapping in the working front part or moving the actual logo (although this doesnt look possible from a simple eye inspection)? Many thanks for any advice offered

The main board with the Breitling logo is the main component of the module. The only other part is the LCD panel and the holder.
So if it's not working, it's likely to be this board itself. Of course it could be the trimmer or the QC or a track on this board, but more likely the IC.
The IC is under the LCD panel, protected by a little plastic cover..........unprotected wire bonds lurk underneath this cover

The digital ESA movements (and ana-digi movements) used this pathetic IC "protection" cover, which was less than adequate.

I've got a Zodiac 942.711 where the logo was actually a separate little plaque, which could be lifted off. Unfortunately, I think the Breitling ones are just printed on the gold rectangle of the board.

Rgds.

Unfortunately, I think you're right about the Breitling logo. Doesn't look removable. Will report back if it turns out to be different the next time I open the case to work on it.

Looks like IC fault on mine, with the display driver playing up such that the left most digit flashes a two at random intervals when the time is showing. Date settings are lost almost immediately after exiting the setting mode and date isn't kept. And when the day is supposed to be shown instead of seconds there's just random changing numbers.

Does the module come out by unscrewing the three screws that sit on the metal rim that surrounds the module?

The module is released by turning the two case dog screws on the plastic carrier to disengage them from the inner lip- there is one visible top left in your photo, looks like a bolt head with a tag attached. The Breitling (who said Sicura!) logo is an ink stamp on the Breitling 942.711- on some of the "fancy name" Swiss makes using this module it is a tiny waterslide transfer which can be remade fairly easily with a hi res printer.

Thats a pity. Sounds like a lost cause in terms of trying to transplant the Breitling logo part

Any idea if it might be possible to swap some working IC parts for the ones that arent working properly on mine? Of course, I have no idea which are the faulty components and the only documentation I have on this module isn't even clear which screws to remove to get the module out!

One more question, in case any one can help. Thanks!

I have an old ESA 942.711 (branded Certina on back of module) which has a defective display. The first digit of the seconds display cant display 2 or 3 correctly, so numbers 20 to 39 display incorrectly (an extra vertical segment appears on the bottom left of the number).

Is this likely to be an issue with the:
(1) LCD panel; or
(2) circuit ?
