Restore my Seiko A829-6029

Post22 Feb 2016, 18:51

Hello!

I am going to get my Seiko A829 back up and running after 25 or so years of not wearing it.
The rotating ring is quit worn and I am going to replace it with a brand new original I found online and bought.
I took the back off to see what type of battery it takes and it turns out to be a CR2016 how about that it's 2016!

Here is a picture of the watch after I put a new battery in it, the LCD screen is in perfect working order. The Rotating ring turns but not as good as it used to.

Image

Here is a picture of the part I bought it's 100% original. The Rotating Ring comes off rather easy by just using a blunt object that fits in between the watch case and the Rotating Ring
and then you just pry it off...pretty easy.

Image

Here it is next to the old Rotating Ring.

Image

Here is a picture of the original box it came in, the band is a lesser quality for the time and I have bought a new one to use.

Image

Here is a picture of what the watch will look like when done but with some scratches on the case
they will give the watch a little character :mega:, and the band I ordered for it.

Image

Here is a picture of the band I ordered it's original stock and brand new.

Image

Here is a picture of the Rotating Ring off the cause, look at all the grime and also see how the grim
can get built up on the pins. Going forward I think I will be removing the ring and cleaning when
ever I feel starting to not rotate smoothly.

Image

Image

I am going to change out the Crystal as there are a lot of scratches on it. It will be a little tricky as the case is not your usual design inside. I will have to make
something that fits into the space so I get as much even pressure over the crystal and Panel Cover.

Image

All the parts were ordered and on their way. New Crystal, Crystal Gasket, Push Button Gaskets, Back Case Gasket and 4 new Transmission Pins.

Part numbers:
glass 270W17LN00
back seal FE323BAA1
glass seal 86174720
button seal EB0055BOA
transmission pin 81604979
Push Pins 80606299

I found this website called primrosesupplies.com the guy there is really helpful and had most every part for very reasonable prices.
I did order a couple tools from Essingler.com also.

That's it for now as I do more I will update this post, any help, opinions, questions are greatly appreciated. :Prost:

Nice watch, but shouldn't this post be in the "Vintage DSM and LCD" section?

It looks like its in the right section.

look forward to the restore. I like the band choice, very good.
Be careful if you take the watch apart, the pins for the rotating bezel selection are very small and easy to lose. You'll find a tech guide here

That should help if you havent already found one.

The Crystal has scratches on it that the picture does not show I am going to replace it.

With regards to pressing the crystal out.
Use a crystal press, select the right cups.
Be sure to select the correct width for the cup for the outside of the watch (which its resting on) which has enough space left between the edge its resting on and its bottom. If its too shallow or too small you risk cracking the crystal you press out, but more important: destroying the aluminum inner dial.
I use very, very hard pressed cardboard (unbendable, but easy to work with. Mine is about 3mm thick) to make a profile which fits the inner structure of the case below the crystal and dial (usually rectangular more or less) perfectly. This to reach the dial and crystal itself (as its a bit lower as the inner case), but more importantly to have optimal pressure on the crystal. (By now I have a whole bunch of those for most Seiko models with pressed crystals, as I can use them over and over)
Then select the correct inner cup which fits best on your self made profile.
Be very careful when pressing, try very hard not to 'shoot out' when the crystal comes out, as it will probably come out under reasonable high pressure and with a 'shock'. This is one of the reasons to select the correct outer cup, so you will have some room..

Goodluck!

You need a quartz timer for the trimming. Otherwise it will be trimming and counting until you found the rate you're looking for, which takes pretty much time and several if not numerous tries. You might even find the original trim was best if you try it that way.
If you don't have one I would suggest leaving it as is.
Once more, goodluck! Its a very nice project. Very cool you're still the first owner ..

A 'quartz timing machine' is maybe a better search option

All the parts were ordered and are on their way. New Crystal, Crystal Gasket, Push Button Gaskets, Back Case Gasket and 4 new Transmission Pins.

My goal here is to have all rubber in the watch replaced and have a flawless Crystal.

Sorry for the delay in posting. The watch it done and it came out great here are some pictures. The only original parts used were the Case, Movements,FacePlate, Band Pins. Everything else was replaced with original Seiko parts. It running rock solid and keeping perfect time. I ended up having to buy a handful of tools to rebuild this watch and found doing it rather fun.

Here is a picture of a washer I had to grind to fit in the case to remove the Crystal, I did not want to damage the Aluminum faceplate.

Here is a picture of the watch in it's original case after finishing the rebuild.

Here one of me wearing it.
