Help - can't exit 24-hour mode...

Post13 Feb 2019, 09:07

arctos.jpg

I bought this Arctos watch recently and have figured out the functions (which are a bit tricky, since they mostly involve a combination of holding the light button then selecting another button) apart from 12/24 hour time — I can't get it into AM/PM mode.

It's very similar to the module in this Elgin watch but is, I think, a Hong Kong module so was probably in many other watches.

Any ideas how to select between 12/24 hour time on this? Thanks!

I did notice the watch is showing 24Hr time in the second time zone mode and it is frequently impossible to change the time display from 24 to 12 hour in the second TZ mode. Does it not change when you set the time in Time 1 mode?- I would expect the change to come up as either the last item or needs a button pushing when changing the hours.

Frustratingly ... no :bang:

T2 allows you to change the hour only (which is expected) and in T2 mode, pressing LIGHT and SET toggles the chime on and off.

In T1 time set mode, I've pressed multiple combinations of buttons when hours are flashing, and tried to take it past 24 to see if it kicks into 12-hour mode after that, but nothing doing.

When in T1 'normal' i.e. not time setting, mode the SET button switches to toggle the chronograph, SELECT button shows the alarm (also in 24-hour time) and MODE button shows the date.

If I hadn't seen the PM symbol in the Elgin photo I'd have thought the Arctos was permanently a 24-hour clock!

Don’t know this module but,

On some watches: Omega 1620, the 12/24 hr selection is a jumper position on the movement. Not menu selectable.

On European marketed watches the 24hr is ROM chip based and therefore not selectable. This would explain the difference between the Elgin and Arctos. It may be that the Elgin is not selectable to 24 hr from am/pm and that it is a North American version while the Arctos is the European version.

Cheers.

Besides, I prefer the 24hr version and when able I select all watches to the 24 display.

That would make sense, since it defaults into 24-hour mode when the battery is removed and replaced too; there is a jumper on the module that I recall too -- I thought it looked a bit odd when I saw it (just a wire soldered across two points, which is a bit unusual to see).

Thanks for the insight!!

Wow - Geoff, you were spot on with that theory...

Here's the jumper in question:

And here's the result when it's jumpered to the other side:

I've learnt something today! Thanks heaps -- although now I'm thinking about switching back :grin1:

:-D

Excellent, now change it back :!: Just my opinion :grin1: 24 hour displays on 80s watch’s are not that common.

Does it actually say 24 over the left hand jumper solder pad and 12 on the right hand solder pad (worn labels).

Actually, it does.
