Spring is in the air!

Post10 Apr 2011, 16:43

..with almost summer temperatures.
Today we started lunching outside on the front terrace.
I put the Seiko EPD in the sun and ..... YESSSS!!!!

Image

It is only a warning as the functional limit is way above boiling point of water.
The moment I put it on the wrist it showed the time again.
The oscilator will be running a bit late when this hot but over a short period it is not measurable and it will be reset tonight anyway.

I wonder why it can't show time but show the warning message.
DOES it show time even above 50°C if you e.g. press a button?

The display shuts off, goes blank and shows the message upon toutching a button.
Since the display is mechanical moving of pigment though tubes on nano level I think it would be a protective measure for the display.

The module will just keep track of time and display again when the temp. omes in operational window again.
I find it very cool and common sense.
It means that the EPD is fitted with a temperature measuring safety device and logic for durability of the display. Neat.

Interesting feature. I wonder if the message will display in Fahrenheit for the watches sold in the US market?

No need to wonder; it does not.

The EPD is a trial product.
Seiko has a history of launching trial runs.
Depending on the market response there will then be an evaluation, a repeat run a modified product or the project binned till later date.

For as far I can extrapolate from serial numbers there has only one modest batch been produced.
Based on fora response there have been véry few sold in the US.
It seems more likely that the project will be revamped rather than that a Fahrenheit adaption on this minute function.
Although I hope to be wrong I think we will see no second run of this homage design try out model.
