Are there any Organic LED watches? Perhaps their on the way

Post06 Jul 2005, 21:49

Hey guys, I came across the following article:

http://www.research.ibm.com/WearableCom ... watch.html

IBM seems to have made a watch prototype, one of them is using an Organic LED display that's sunlight visible. More details here:

http://www.emagin.com/pressreleases/pribmwatch.htm

Photos of the OLED watch display working are here:

http://www.research.ibm.com/WearableCom ... watch.html

It's more than just a watch though, and I'm sure it would be a bit expensive with all the features their trying to put into it.

Could this be a new future for LED watches? I hope more watch companies might consider making a watch with all the functions of the LCD watches we have now, but with super bright OLED displays.

Another great find AlmightyTallest. The video clip is particularly neat. I can't speak with authority, but the project seems to have stalled a little  Since being shown at the 2001 Las Vegas CES, I can't seem to find much more recent info on it. I know the CES is one of the major venues for showcasing 'brown goods', often imediately prior to general release, but it don't seem to be the case here? I think this kind of watch is the way to go in the future, but that future may not be as near as we'd like.

I know what you mean abacus, I think the major delays are coming from integrating all the different systems into what amounts to a watch sized computer. :) The latest info I found about it was dated 2004. Here's another link about how the engineers put all the modules together.

http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/~15-821/CDROM/P ... ami02a.pdf

I think it would be great to just have a simple watch using OLED technology though. Probably would be much cheaper as well (I think) :D

Here's a Samsung OLED watch Phone : http://www.webtechgeek.com/Samsung-GPRS ... #gprswatch

Here's a review of the OLED Samsung phone, pretty funny I think. http://www.ciao.co.uk/Samsung_GPRS_Watc ... ew_5422565

Here's an interesting article about the different technologies of OLED displays. http://www.theclockmag.com/april/articl ... beedit.htm

Be sure to let the pictures load in the link above and take a look at that flexible 7 segment display, pretty modern yet retro at the same time.

Good to hear fron you again DragonFly2. I know in an earlier post, you mentioned a blue led prototype, but didn't know it was an OLED. In fact didn't even know OLED existed till this thread! So how soon is it to production? and the big question -> any idea at all about price? Thanks

Hi, I hope to launch limited production in August, as for the price I shall have to say TBA closer to the launch time. You have probably read my previous thread on blue LED displays, just to clarify I have both the OLED display and a 7 segment blue LED display wristwatches under development at present. In addition to this I have a 'nixie tube' design(2 tube) also under development. I will keep you all updated via the forum.

Hi, I should have added this to my previous post, as a matter of interest would a 'white' digit LED display (7 segment) be of interest? I will be making a prototype for this along with the blue versions.(I am making it for myself to wear as a demo model but if there is sufficient interest I will make more, it is the most costly display type, more so than blue and its rarity may add to its value).

White LED's sound neato! Why not give it a go, take some pictures of it in action when you have a prototype?

I'm especially interested in purchasing the blue OLED watch. Please keep us informed on what's going on with your projects DragonFly2.

The Nixie Tube watch sounds very cool too :)

Sorry to bring up an old post guys,

But has anyone seen or heard of any new Organic LED display watches on the market?

It's been 6 months since my last post on this subject, was hoping some of you guys in the know would have any info about new OLED developments. :)

I'd expect if there is going to be anything in the near future, it will be announced at CES, http://www.cesweb.org/default_flash.asp on Jan 5.

Thanks for the link mauricev, guess I'll have to wait a little longer for an OLED watch. :(

But I did find this interesting info. Check out this site, they have small PLED displays for sale now.

Now I might have imagined this, but i'm sure I noticed that some of the newer MP3 players (possibly a Sony) had an OLED display. Now if this is the case, and OLED's are already in general use in small electronic items, I hope its only a fairly simple task to integrate the technology into a wristwatch?

Your actually correct Abacus, alot of the MP3 players use OLED displays, if you want to see a listing and some pictures of the displays, just go to Ebay and type in the following:

"OLED display"

lol, you'll find a ton of them :) I was hoping someone would pick up on this technology to create a nice watch with it. Would be very cool in my opinion. Still hoping though :)

I questioned the Tech Support guys at Samsung about the new OLED watch phone and this was the response.

"Thank you for your inquiry about the watch phone. At this time the watch phone has been scratched from launch. Its future is very much in question at this time. For more information on any of our other products, please feel free to call us at 1-888-987-4357 and/or visit the telecommunications website at http://www.samsungusa.com/wireless.

Your interest in Samsung products is appreciated."

Sincerely,
Technical Support
Samtech080

So it seems that an OLED watch phone isn't going to happen yet. :(
