a special automatic

Post15 Dec 2011, 19:55

i noticed this one on ebay.

the left one..hmmm looks interesting :-D

when i opened it, i see 2 problems...the light is not working and the weight is loose from the automatic.

first clean the watch, then try to solve the light and then reattach the contre weight to the work itself.....piece of cake :-D

TIme for a remake
First a sand the case in one direction with 600 so it becomes matt, then a polish the side to a clean shiny look.

now i noticed that the plastic is really old and i decide to cut another one ...but in mineral glass from a old microscope glass plate.
I also don't want the glass the sit on top of the watch....i want a clean look so i maken the new glass on the inside of the case..so the light could enlighten the sides of the glass.

yess all handwork.

Thats a fugly watch Kasper, I love it. I have plenty of fugly watches including the Sicura Instalite with a light like yours.

What did you use to cut the crystal?

hi Adam,

fugly watch..oke, never heard of it but i have learned something new :-D
I have no watchmakers background so maybe thats why. I just love having beautiful things around me.

check this out. btw the fugly glass is cut by hand on a diamond cutting stone..then taped it to the case and filled it from the inside with superglue.
First i wanted to mix luminous paint with the superglue..just for fun :-D to light up the bezel of the glass.

btw Adam..where do i have to sent pictures for your dwl? 3 pictures and in the same style as all the others, i presume?

Kasper

Fugly means 'F**cki*g Ugly' I think. To me it means a watch that people either love or hate. Usually designed on a Friday afternoon after a liquid lunch.

Seiko did quite a few, but there are lots around. My personal collection is made up of a high number of fugly watches. They are the ones that make people look twice at your wrist and either go ummmm or argh!.
For instance a lot of people think the Seiko G757-5020 is Fugly but I think its an outstanding and brave design, but still probably on a Friday afternoon.

I hope I didnt offend, I love the design of your watch.

regards

This watch was also sold as the Atlantic Starflash- I have one in SS and I much prefer it to the Sicura Instalite (better made and the movement is great quality- runs 40 hours off wrist). Atlantic is one of those small Swiss companies who have been around since the year dot (well, 1888) and have produced quite a few interesting watches (and still do). Of all their watches my favorite is the Worldmaster (in any of the dozen variations)- a big (40mm) simple elegant mechanical.

Indeed; ´fugly´ is a contrated expression of subjective taste.

The more extreme a watch is adhering to a style; period, fashion or design type, the more people will not like it.
The better designed to, more strictly following a style the ´uglier´ it gets for middle of the road taste from a different time.
This illustrates that ´ugly´ is as much in the eye of the beholder as is beauty.

The expression for ´love it or hate it´ is Marmite.
Google it; it´s fun M:)W:)M
As a bonus it is a far more correct expression to use.
