Bulova Accutron Quartz 242 TZ

Post04 May 2013, 17:17

This is an amazing watch which seems to be hard to come by.

A Bulova Accutron.
However it is not a tuning fork watch from Bulova but it still has some amazing features.
It's crown can be pulled out in 3 steps.
As usual to set the time but this is the TZ version in which case it will also allow you to adjust the hour hand only.
This of course comes in handy when changing Timezones.

There is also a very clever button at the 4 hour mark position.
This function is called ACCUSET and is pure MAGIC.

To use the button, the watch must have been synchronized to coordinate the second hand and the button.
This has to be done every time the battery is changed.

1) Pull the crown out to position 3 when the seconds hand reaches the 60 second position
2) The second hand will stop
3) push in the button
4) set the time as normal

This tells the circuit where 12 is.

To use the ACCUSET button:

1) push the button, this stops the second hand
2) when the time reference reaches the 60th second, release the button

The second hand will then move to the correct second by either moving slow or fast until it reaches the correct second.

nice quality from Bulova by Citizen as Bulova did not produce any quartz watches themselves.
for instance a later Bulova 246 is really a Citizen 8656.
some pics of the 242 below:

if you want a service manual for this calibre just let me know.

That is a real pity indeed! Sounds like something I would be eagerly interested in to try it out :-). Why would you have to tell the watch where 12 o'clock is? And if you can adjust the hour hand by itself, wouldn't that require a very precise adjustment? I mean, if you don't do this properly, the hour hand points to say 8 o'clock while the minute hand is at 10 minutes past 8.

My guess, it is to synchronise the watch seconds hand only so if it runs a little fast or slow.
You can easily correct it using a time signal from for instance a radio broadcast.
It will in no way effect the hour or minute hands.
I was very curious myself just like you to find out and see this for myself.
Alas i will have to wait for another nice example to pop up on the bay or something.
