Nivada LCD

Post03 Oct 2009, 07:33

Hi All.
I recently picked up this NOS Nivada LCD:

I thought I'd share a picture of the early module. It's interesting in that it runs on 3V. I don't think I've seen an LCD which runs on 3V before. Some have 2 batteries, but they are not usually in series like this (one is usally dedicated for the light). The QC is also strange (at the top of the module). Don't think I've seen one like this before either. Here's the module:

That's an esa 9315. They're nice reliable modules and were often used by quality Swiss watch producers in the late 70's. Longines, certina, and tissot to name but a few.

Not sure about the 3v issue. I always presumed one battery was for running the night light. They certainly behave strangley without the retaining clip on the night light side in place (I guess it completes the circuit).

Nice watch by the way :-)

Thanks Digi.
I've been thinking........perhaps the seller accidentally put the batteries in like this (I haven't even opened it yet), the pictures are from the auction.

Since one battery is probably for the light, it should work up or down, and may have no other impact on the rest of the circuit. I'll crack it open and check it out.

i wonder if that is by the croton watch co. they used the name nivada and nivada grenchen on some of their mechanical models of the 1950's. i also saw an invicta posted recently. the helbros mechanical watch was marketed under the name invicta. there is a modern invicta but i don't think it has anything to do with these older companies that no longer exist in anything but name. peter

The auction mentioned Nivada Grenchen, but it's not written on the case at all. I haven't heard of this brand before.
Although there are Croton digitals out there. I think they made a DSM LCD......
