Did you ever see anything like this !

In my quest to get a cheap module for my LaGenerale I picked up an old Litronix for a fiver thinking the module 'might' just be OK..

Now take a close look at the picture underneath the led bubbles..

Battery residue ?

Can you lift the bubbles and blow it out maybe ?

Not risking a lot if it all goes to t*ts..

Cheers

I thought it was the shattered remains of the display until I zoomed in on the photo - now I'm not sure what it is, the bubble display looks as if it will lift off to let the bits of 'whatever' fall out, although around the display is quite a delicate area, with all those fine wire bonds, and not a good place to have anything rattling loose. :-(

My money is on it being corrosion. For whatever reason, they coated the wiredbonds(sometimes) going to the IC on those, but never the display. And those are lead wire-bonds, so they can corrode from a strong fart smell in the air  . But seriously, just the least amount of battery leakage, even apparently the acidic gases can send those things into a puffy mass. I'll be glad if I am wrong. And be careful while under there, many get ruined by the plastic cover banging the bonds on the way off. :x
