1970's LED - trying to get working

Post18 Dec 2009, 15:31

Hello,

I've got an old LED watch from the mid 1970's. It's got 'MERCURY TIME N.Y. USA' engraved on the back. It's also got 'ITALY' engraved on the locking clasp. The watch is gold in colour with a red face, and has a small fish scale effect all over. It has 1 button on the top right.
It takes 2 batteries but unfortunately it doesn't work. I took it to a couple of watch repair places where I live in the Midlands UK, but they just said it's too old and you cant get parts for these now. One suggested an electrician as it's an old LED watch, he also said the watch has all it's original parts.
I read some where that you can change the module inside the watch to one that works.
Does anyone know where or how I could get this watch working again. Any input very much appreciated.

Many thanks.

I don't think you will have any problem finding the parts you require and you have found the right place to ask - to help identify the make of the module It would be handy if you could upload a photograph of the watch and module.

Also give details of any markings on the module itself e.g Hughes etc?

Have a look here to see if you can identify the watch on this site

How to upload photographs.

Below the text box when making or replying to a topic, there is an ImageShack toolbar. To put a picture into your posting:

6.Close ImageShack window.
5.Paste(left click mouse) into text box and then put your text before or after that.
6.That's all Folks!!

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I took photos of the watch and module recently, I'll try and put them on, unfortunately I'm rubbish on a computer so if I have trouble I'll get someone to do it for me.
But there was some detail on the module. In the middle it said 'FRONTIER'. At one end of the module it said 'made in usa' and at the othe end it said 'NO (0) JEWELS'. The watch has no name on the outside by the way.

I should imagine that a replacement Frontier module would be easy enough to obtain, it will help if you could measure the width of the module in millimeters and state the position of the command and set buttons - usually described as positions on a clock face e.g 1 o'clock, 3 o'clock etc.

This is the watch from the front. Recently the spring that is in the module has come loose, the other spring is ok, it's still stuck to the case.
Thanks for the help with uploading Mick, made it a lot easier.

The width in mm is 29. The command button looks at 1o'clock ish and the set button is at 3.
