Seiko H249-5069 no alarm beeps, how to open...

Post26 May 2010, 19:44

Today recieved my NOS Seiko H249-5069. Watch in perfect new old stock condition, and running. I highlighted the speakersection:

Here you see the speakersection in big:

While trying out the watch, I found out that the alarm does not reproduce it's beeps. This is strange, because while switching between the different modes of the display, I hear a beep. So there seems to be a working sound. And what is remarkable too: when the time reaches the moment of alarmtime, then the speaker indicator flashes, until I push one of the buttons. My conclusion is: the alarm goes of (blinking indicator) but the (alarm)beeps won't function.

Secondly I tried holding down both buttons on the left, which mostly is a alarm-demo-mode on this kind of Seiko watches. Doing so, I get the same result: no beeps, and a flashing speaker indicator.

As you can see on the pictures above, there seems to be a dark spot on the middle (speaker?) hole. When I saw this, my assumption was ''it looks like there has been a short circuit in the speaker part of this watch''.

I presented my remarks to the seller of the watch. His answer was: ''because your hear a beep while changing between modes, the alarmbeep should function. Keep trying the alarm. When this doesn't work after all, the only possibility is that the watch was started with a ''logical error''. To repair this you should restart the watch (open it, remove battery for at least 2 minutes, and put battery back in).''

I never opened a watch like this, but assume I have to use plastic screwdrivers to lift the case on the back, on the places as highlighted here in the picture ???:

- does this kind of error sound familiar, and what can I do about it?
- can I open the back as shown in the picture?

Thanx

Hi WilSeiko,
yes, you can open the caseback at those points using a very thin screwdriver. I have also used a razor blade but most are too thin and snap off. You have to be real careful because they never seem to open on the first try and if/when the screwdriver or case knife slips it may leave a scratch on the case back.

The speaker hole is normal - I have several Seikos that have the exact same set up; a long 'speaker grill section' with the middle are having the hole. The rest of the speaker grill is just for looks.

It does seem odd that you can hear the beeps when pressing buttons but not hear the alarm. :?: Logically,l you should not hear any sounds if the speaker is not working. Could be that part of the speaker mechanism isn't making proper contact or that there is a 'logic fault'. First step would be to remove the battery and let it sit for a minute or so then re-install and try it again.

I tried to open, but I can't get it done. I'll visit my local jewelry tomorrow and ask him do try for me. Hope that will be the solution...
