Seiko LCD crystal - glass ?

Post27 Jan 2011, 01:37

Hi All

I have a nice A259-5019 model seiko which has a few light scratches on the crystal that i would like to polish out . I think it's glass. xan anyone confirm this /

If so is Jewellers rouge the best polishing compound ?

Cheers

All the early Seikos have glass crystals (unless someone has cut a plastic replacement). They used different types of glass on different models and while some are "soft" and comparatively easy to grind & polish any with "Hardlex" crystals are a lot more work. Grinding/polishing glass is an art- check out some of the amateur telescope mirror making sites for a step by step guide to doing this.

Hi Tom

Thanks. It may sound daft but the crystal looks soft. The scratches are no harsh as I've seen before (eg on my 70's Tissot seastar tick-tock).

I just read a post on another watch forum where a guy used various grades of wet and dry up to 2000 then cerium oxide powder (whatever that is) in a paste fo a final polish..

Cheers

James
