Dead orient touch led. New quartz crystal?

Post23 Dec 2011, 14:42

Hi, my first "proper" led watch and I'm starting with a Orient touch led

It's dead. Reading this great site I learned about the conductive rubber thingy i need, making a contact between the module and the touch bezel. Also the battery clamp is missing, but that's not a big problem.

The problem is the module not starting, applying power to it, sometimes a random led segment lights up, no reaction to the buttons. So maybe a new quartz crystal is the "only" problem? I tried a crystal from a parts lcd watch but that didn't do the trick, maybe not the right type, or I fried it with my 15 watt soldering iron. (I wás careful  )

Any gurus with helpful tips would be very appreciated.

I can get 100 of these for about 8 euros. It's more than I need, but now I can fry some in my soldering attempts ;-)
And of course have some in stock for other led watches :-D
Any good?

Do you know anyone with an oscilloscope or freq counter. First thing I reckon would be to know if the crystal is actually running could be that evne the original was good..

.. it's a problem I'm having right now with an old LCD :-?

Good luck

Nice to see more Duchies :)

when I have time I'll try to make the alternative quartz tester I saw here on the forum. Cheap lcd, remove the quartz, add wires. I should be able to test my crystals :)

Good crystals don't always work ' in-circuit' hence the 'scope test.
Trimming caps can also give trouble by all accounts...

Cheers

Yeah a scope, would be nice to have one and knowing how to use it :-)

Good tip about the trimmer though.

I think I'll take my time with this one, won't want to rush it and break something :)

Be careful with those blobs of solder on the battery contacts. Solder is soft and they look pretty small but you really don't want any pressure points on the ceramic PCB when you reassemble the thing with batteries. The blobs don't need to be there for electrical continuity and might make the electrical contact worse than with a nice clean, flat pad.

Good luck with your oscilator issues.

great tip! (i was wondering about those blobs..)

Maybe I'll let this one rest for a while, and first replace the quartz of my pimp nepro lcd :) That one works fine when cold, and starts to show the signs of a bad working oscillator when warmed up. That one is easier to work on I think.

I'm somewhat experienced with tinkering, but more used to things like this :-)

hello,
the Touchtrons have a complicated double or triple layer ceramic PCB and they are rarely repairable unless you can source a damaged surface mounted component and replace it.
Check the pics on my website as the rubber conductive pins on top of the module might be missing.
