Need some help troubleshooting a longines Gemini II

Post21 Dec 2016, 03:26

Hi everyone,

Don't let the history fool you I've been a watch hobbyist for a while. I picked up a longines Gemini II this past weekend in good condition but I'm trying to get it running. I've read all I can find on a few sites but there's doesn't seem to be much on this watch and I need help with repair. When I put two batteries in the LCD comes on, then slowly fades off, the leds turn on when you bridge the batteries using something other than the case. I'm not afraid to take things apart and didn't see any signs of fried components when I took it part a little bit. However I don't want to get too in depth in disassembly if at all possible.

When you put the back on it bridges the two batteries together completing the circuit. The LCD display comes on (not all of it) and one of the led digits comes one. Here is the weird part,if you push the case back down the LCD turns off, if you pull it up a little and wiggle it different LCD digits turn on and off and so do some of the led digits.

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like pressure on the module is affecting the continuity of one or more circuits. Try heating the module with a hair dryer to see if things stabilize or conversely, cooling the module in the fridge, not freezer.

It may be a cracked circuit board or a cold solder joint that is causing an intermittent fault.

Or it is an aging cap or trace with corrosion.

Would a heat gun be too much? I used contact cleaner on the case and contacts so I got rid of all the corrosion. I'll try the heat and cool method.

NOT A HEAT GUN,

Hair dryer, just to warm the circuit. Heat gun too much heat.

Cheers

Also check solder joints.

Ok so update.

I tried the hairdryer method and no go. I looked at the leads and there are multiple ones off of the leds they are as thick as a hair and there is no way I could re solder them. Is there anyone in the USA that could reattach them and look over the watch? I'd like to get this working because it's a really nice watch that I'd like to wear.

Not many people offer a wire bonding service, Bruce W (USA) and Hanno (Germany) might be your best bets........Or keep an eye out on eBay for a replacement module.
