Microscope???

Post04 Oct 2005, 08:40

Howdy!

What do you use when fixing the tiny stuff inside a led, microscope or just a plain magnifier?

Ive tried using a x10 magnifier but it aint working for me.

Hmmmm, maybe I could buy the Hubble telescope from NASA!

I use a Bausch & Lomb StereoZoom 5 binocular microscope [fitted with 15X WideField eyepieces]. With a variable mag factor of .7-3.0, this gives a magnification range of 10 to 45X, suitable for almost any LED repair problem. If you're going to be doing wire bond fixes, the scope can be fitted with a 2X field lens, bumping the mag range to 20-90X. The scopes and accessory lenses show up all the time on eBay; expect to pay $150-250 depending on condition and optics. Mine has already paid for itself many times over...

Seriously considering a Microscope as well Bruce, working with a handheld 10x is driving me insane. It will cost me around 400 but I figure a number of saved watches over time will make it worthwhile

Prescicion[spelling is not my forte] World is an ebay store full of microscopes. I recently picked up a 20-40X Stereo Microscope WITH USB computer camera for $239 - chinese made, but all steel w/glass optics - really quite nice. Then go over to widgetsupply.com and buy their 10X Goosenecked stand magnifier with 6" flourescent for around $40(I had a slew of magnifiers...actually bought this for the Mrs.) IMHO, the 40X will prove to be overkill much of the time, but it depends on what you are doing. Even for wirebonds it can be a bit heady. A nice 3X stand type is very adequate for a lot of work, and it gives you about 3.5"(9cm?) of focal distance....plenty of room for your grubby paws and a soldering iron.

If you can, get a boom type microscope. This way the head is suspended above your work area leaving you lots of room to manuver. IMHO, better than working on a microscope stage.

I found a really nice model on the site 1up recommended, its not boom but it zooms and has an 8" working distance, many have 4 but even that is plenty
