A nice set of matching pairs

Taking a comment from Bucko that he likes a nice matching pair in another thread I too find that i must have a matching pair of any watch I like. It seems that the majority of collectors preference is for stainless steel but I cannot make up my mind. For some watches I prefer the gold version and for others the SS. I have noticed that for some watches it is more than just the colour that varies and that particulary intriges me such as the bracelets on the Omega digital 2 are quite different. Perhaps we can start a thread where we can show our matching pairs but also discuss any differences?

First off is the Pulsars Execs - I like the fact that they have different modules and that one is a magnet set (SS) and the other is auto set - the gold version appeals more to my eye.

Next up are the Pulsar LCDs - I love the fact that the display background differ to match the colour of the watch - Gold wins it for me again.

and here are the Omega digital 2s. The bracelet designs are quite different and unfortuntely the gold bracelet is not up to the standard of the SS. SS wins this round.

This is going to sound horribly metro, but when I find a watch model that I really like, I try to get a matched set so I can coordinate them with what I'm wearing - gold with warm colors, silver with cool colors. My gold P3 goes great with an orange shirt whereas I like to wear stainless with black / blue / purple.

Here are some of my favorite sets. I can't decide which I like the most although I'm currently partial to my matching P4s, my Hamilton QED's and the matched pairs of TV faced Accutrons.

One other thing - the gold and stainless Pulsars are different shapes! For the P3s, the stainless model is more rounded and the gold model is more square (look at where the lugs meet the case). I prefer the shape of the stainless P3s. For the P4, the gold model is longer horizontally than the stainless model. For the P4s, I tend to prefer the shape of the gold models.

The original question leads me on to wondering why some models such as the Pulsar Big Time where only produced in SS, whilst others from the same period where produced in both gold and silver tones?

Well Abe, even if you would wear your gold filled ladies oval as shown on your picture with a warm pink shirt, this is OK for us. We are tolerant here at dwf!

BTW you make such great pictures! They are so professionally taken. Please send a mail which equipment you are using and how long it takes to take the final picture..

I also would love to know why the Bigtime was only manufactured in SS as well. A gold filled version would be stunning!

Abe - me too! - gold with brown, yellow and green, SS with blues and grays.

New watch received today to make a matched pair - will post tomorrow.

These I have managed to pick up in the last 2 weeks. I have been looking out for this shape of the Hamilton QEDII for quite a while and then 2 come together! These have the same module as the Omega Digital 2s (Frontier 1603) and so are swapable with them. These are the most comfortable watches I have every worn and are like a cuff around the wrist. Only differences with these is that the brand logos are in a different position. Its a shame about the small dint on the SS on the link however this still wins the battle for me but only just.

Hanno - I agree with you, Abes pictures are quite fantastic. No only that but when you receive one they are even better looking. I think I need a few hints and tips on scratch removal, polishing and photography to make mine look better.

Wow - nice QEDs! Personally, I like the logo in the corner on both the QED I and II models, so I like the gold one, but they're both nice watches. The bracelets on these models are surprisingly heavy. The smaller size does make the QED II's a bit more comfortable than the QED I models, although I find that all of the Hamilton models have sharp edges on the bracelet and case which make them a little bit uncomfortable after long hours of wearing. With the rectilinear style that they have, guess there probably isn't a good way to soften the edges. Sometimes you need to sacrifice a bit for style.

Thanks for the kind words on the photography and humble apologies for not responding sooner. I thought about it and there's a bit more than just a simple short answer / paragraph response so I think the proper thing to do is to write up my notes into a web page documenting the workflow that I use (and problems that I encounter). I'll try to get that done this weekend, at least as a good starting point. It would be best to include sets of example photographs showing both good and bad technique, but that may take a bit longer. It can be pretty challenging sometimes. I think we've all had the experience of getting a great new watch and then trying to photograph it and being left thinking "That's NOT what the watch looks like. The watch looks far better than that! Really!".

At last after 6 months of serching I've finally found the SS version of the Pulsar Classic to go with the GF. These are nearly identical - both have the DOW modules but the Pulsar logos are of a different size. The SS version definately wins this round for me. Picture taken with a phone camera - not a good idea.
