Back to the Future: Seiko LCD Memory Chronograph

Post22 Nov 2008, 18:42

I was cleaning out my file cabinet yesterday and found my old Seiko "Memory Chronograph" kicking around in the back of a drawer.

I last remembered wearing this watch sometime in the 1980s - the battery had probably been dead for the last 20 years.

I was really hoping the watch still worked and I brought it to my local jeweler to have the battery replaced. He put in a new one but the display stayed blank. "It doesn't look good," he said. But then continued, "wait, let me try something my Seiko rep taught me..."

He said this was some sort of reboot. Whatever it was, it worked:

Tor, good to hear from you! The trick is there is a contact point on many Seiko modules that needs one to touch along with the "+" side of the battery for a second - some are marked, some aren't. The tell-tal is an opening in the plastic which covers the back side of most Sanyo modules. The opening will have an exposed gold contact showing, usually within 3-4mm of the battery hole. Tweezers across the two points!
