New Purchase..

Post14 Feb 2010, 10:46

Hi All

Received yesterday latest toy - an unbranded stainless number.

It's working which makes a change from my other budget buys however LEDS seem a bit 'weedy'. Module has green/turquoise coloured battery holder and says 'Made in Scotland' (Hughes ? or Nat Semi maybe ?). Batteries measured about 1.41, 1.47 V each I think

Cleaned contacts with some 'Limelite' which I guess is UK equivalent to CLR but no real change.

Would fresh (1.55V) batteries make any big difference or is that it would anyone know.

Cheers all

James

You will be a 'Geek' next ;-)

I think the 'Made In Scotland' module will be a Hughes, same as this one?

To brighten the display it would be worth trying new batteries, if the crystal is scratches cleaning it can make the display seem brighter.

How about uploading a photo?

Hi Bucko

yep that module looks about right - rests on a rubber band arrangement face-side in the case.

Wiill polish up the crystal and try a piccy soon. Macro photography
not my strong point - come that not sure what is.. :-?

LED watch collecting is addictive isn't it? I'm sure you've read this before, but don't cheap out on the batteries. Buy some silver oxide cells. They don't lose much voltage over time and don't physically expand as much as the alkalines as the age. I've found that the Renata brand cells last the longest.

Hi All

Polished the crystal and I think the brightness has improved. I do still need to try some fresh batteries though.

As requested below is a picture of the the new one (I had to take picture in setting mode - the command only allows a very short burst of time with this module). The quality of the case seems good and it has two piece screw on back - absolutely no markings however. For reference I have included a picture of another unit with a dots display from Nat semi.

Thats a nice stainless LED, a very good buy that one... :-)

Are the battery contacts on the module shiny bright, these Hughes modules work a lot better with clean battery contacts. A glass fiber contact cleaning pen is the best bit of kit for this job.

Hi Klippie

That's another thing to try - I did try the limelight but I wouldn't say they are 'shiny bright'.

I don't recall saying how much I paid ;-) I must get a new Ebay account (lol).

Most pleased with the Benrus as well which has turned out to be a runner !

Cheers

James
