Found another one - Seiko Alarm Chrono

Post10 Mar 2013, 06:05

Here is another LCD I found I own - Seiko Alarm Chrono A914-5A39 AO. The crystal is in a sorry state but perhaps I could try and polish it. The original Seiko bracelet is in a good condition for it's age. Speaking of which, could somebody give me an idea when this watch was made? (80's?) Thanks

Probably 1984-85 you can find out exactly by checking the serial number on the back. The first digit is the year and the second digit the month starting with '1-9' and finishing with' O, N, D' for October, November and December respectively.

Thanks Adam - s/n starts 42 (1287) hence using your formula February, 1984 but there are no letters at the end?. Cheers

Nice one, you don't see the 5A39 very often. (5A09 and 5010 are more plentiful)
Polishing is possible but takes a very long time (very hard glass), and even then the outcome could not be to your satisfaction.
Not to mention that the crystal can break if heated up by the polishing action.
But here's a new crystal for your watch. ;-)

Thanks, that's very useful link however I've read on this forum that some crystals are pressed in on a special machine and/or contain tiny rubber gaskets - will I be able to swap the glass without a hassle?

My experience is that you can get the glass out with your thumbs from the inside, but very gently not to bend the bezel (metal plate with the text).
What i also did once, is break the old glass (with a big nail and hammer) with the glass down on the floor not to damage the bezel, that one i couldn't get out, and it doesn't matter that the glass is broken as you don't need the old one anymore.
If you use the old gasket it will be easier to fit the glass.

Ok, I splashed out on a new glass. Let's just hope the old one will just 'pop right out' without having to bang it out :grin1: of the insert. Thanks

Make yourself an insert that fits the inside the case the size of the internal bezel and use this to push out. You stand much less chance of damaging the internal bezel this way.

Yes it's bezel instead of "insert" , thanks Adam. ;-)

This is not a tech guide for the A914, but it shows what adam means.
On page 6 it talks about an "insert disk" ,in the picture.

Thanks, the Tissot F1 pictorial definitely helps. Cheers
