Post19 Sep 2014, 18:45

AT LAST :Prost: thanks to Enzo, i'm the proud owner of a original working Optel Dsm module and watch.

After scoring my first segtronic watch, i wanted a Dsm to. So after years, i have an original and i transplanted it in my nos segtronic case...enjoy the result. Really stunning the wear this piece of history around my wrist :-D

Welcome Kasper, its a pretty cool club to be in I hope you enjoy it.

We all meet up at the White Horse pub every third Tuesday of the month to discuss and show off our DSMs over a pint of beer.

if only...

I have the same flashing display DSM, although the digits have never been easy to read the display on mine does not appear to be flashing as brightly as it used to, is this a common fault, anything I can do about it?

I think the DSM displays degrade (very gradually) over time in normal conditions. I personally store mine in an airtight bag with a pack of silica gel inside. The even more conservative approach is to take out the battery when not in use. One recommendation was to ensure the battery never runs out whilst in the watch which was borne out of experience/observation as this seemed to decrease the sharpness of the display (and increase the milky looking sheen that appears and obscures the visibility/sharpness of the digits)

I have only ever done this and it has been used only very sparingly over the last three years maybe worn on 7 or 8 occasions, am I correct in thinking that the display is vacuum sealed and it could be the loss of vacuum and subsequent escape of gases that causes the problem?

That's a beauty Kasper - those Optel Dsm's are a favourite of mine. Cracking original bracelet as well. Never seen one with that style of end link before - cool.

I've never had any problems with the displays on mine. I've had them stored without batteries for years then put one in and they're fine. I've had batteries run out in them - again fine. All LCD's/DSM's will fail one day as the displays can't possibly stay airtight forever. Fifty more years or so will suit me fine though.

Now about those green trousers... ;-)

Super nice and crisp Optel DSM, wear it proudly!
In ref to displays they loose vacuum (especially Microma sealed with epoxy).
They naturally die out/dry out as there is likely always some residual degradation of the crystals which did not have the purity as they would have today.
Durable displays were the biggest challenge for Optel and were never intended to last forever so don't be surprised that they loose sharpness.
This was mentioned already in the 1972 article from Popular Science I posted here:

This is an absolutely gorgeous example of an early flashing LCD. Also, I don’t recall anybody that I knew of in the ‘70s wearing a LCD watch before 1979 -- then everybody and his brother/sister had one.

:mega: A rare bird indeed…

Enjoy!
