First digital watch - correct info please

Post09 Oct 2013, 01:01

So , Aftr a recent pub quiz the above question was raised regarding production watches

my answer was 1 of 2 possibilities but the judge said I was wrong ...

I feel there is a decrepancy between quartz analogue and digital as we know it
From my understanding the pulsar was the first digital watch to be sold to the public in '72

Also there was the quartz by Seiko and BETA 1 that was realeased in '67.

The answer to the quiz question was '68

Where did I go wrong and what is the actual definition of a digital watch ?

I would say that the first truly digital watch was the Pulsar in '72 although the Sun newspaper did state in Mondays paper that Casio made the first digital watch in 1957

the first one on the market is the pulsar (1972), only just a few months early then the first lcd as for digital digits with a battery.

you also have mechanical digits starting from the early 1920 with a winding system or later with battery.

For me a digital watch is made with changing digital digits and a battery.

I agree 100% with kasper on this.
That would mean the first digital watch on the market was the pulsar in 1972.

Casio made the first digital watch in 1957

Only thing for 1957 in the history books about casio, is a "compact" calculator.

That judge is just plain wrong in my opinion, or he has an other definition of a digital watch, like you said.

Hi,

It's pretty widely accepted that the first digital was the Pulsar P1 released in April of 72. However, the article may have been referring to a curious claim by a well known crackpot named Dr. Nakamatsu who claimed to have invented the first digital in the 50's (though there doesn't appear to be any physical evidence to support this):
viewtopic.php?f=60&t=5954#p38251

I've seen it written that Casio supports this claim for some reason, which is probably why this article is connecting Casio to the claim of being involved with the first digital:

So, I wouldn't say that the article is entirely wrong, it's just based upon sketchy claims.
