Like you, I don't like the inscriptions. I removed one from a stainless steel back yesterday by placing a piece of 400 grit wet sanding paper on a flat table, added water, and then just started rubbing back and forth in the direction of the brushed finish. I was able to remove it completely. It just depends on how deep the engraver went.
I've done this a couple of times. It is harder with the gold fill back because you may go through the gold before you get the engraving out, but with a SS back, you can go much deeper.
