SOLD....:first field effect LCD Westclox Quartzmatic1973 NOS

Post14 Mar 2008, 22:18

the first field effect LCD watch marketed under a few brands,
of which Gruen Teletime is the most known and shown in the watch bible.
the module is the same and produced by AMI Inc. American Microsystems.
stem-set: turn crown counterclockwise to change hours, pull out and turn clockwise to change minutes.
no other functions were available at that time, only a flashing colon.

all original including stainless steel goldplated expansion band.
NOS condition (not mint) with some storage wear.
large and heavy case 38mm wide.
offers welcome, PM me.

Very groovy. It makes me want to put on a pair of bellbottoms. LOL.
Seriously though - great watch.

Very nice - but I sort of switched to vintage calculators now (a minty Sharp EL-805 has arrived a few minutes ago :-D)

Yes, that's truly a problem ;-)
But now I have a nice Texas Instruments SR-50 (the first scientific calculator with algebraic input/infix notation, as opposed to HP-35's RPN) on my desktop at work - and I use it several times a day ;-)

I too have a minty fresh boxed Quartzmatic. Big chunky lump of early 70's madness.

Theres a seller on ebay who had a pile of these, mostly NOS and boxed, and he usually has a BIN of about $79.

EG, past ebay item 230207026714

considering the historical value and complete package on offer from this e bay seller i would say he has completly undersold these.being the first lcd and the quality imo $399 would be nearer the mark.i doubt very much if you can get them now for that price.

I totally agree ! Its one of the very first LCD watches, in a big chunky early 70s style.

I'd happily consider selling my boxed version for $399.

anyone interested, drop me a PM.

is only seldom do you get a chance of a real bargain, this was one such chance!perhaps $399 is also underselling it.like everything else it is only worth what a collector is willing to pay.but this particular item must be rare, considering its historical value etc.i believe their was also a s/s version?

yup - I have both SS and gold plated variety, both with original boxes and docs.

sadly its not solid 18kt, but i'm surprised no ones wacked off an email about gold hitting $1,030 an ounce this week, becuase that makes alot of the solid gold digital pulsars / omegas worth $4k-$5k in melt value alone. Historically there collectible value seems to be x3 to x4 the underlying gold value, with some adjustment for condition, rarity, completeness etc.
