it's sealed

Post16 Mar 2008, 03:21

my resurrected synchronar is now resealed. i used weldon#16. i got this product because it is thicker than #3 and the seams where i had pried the top & bottom apart were kind of jagged. i thought the thicker weldon would be good for a filler in the gaps. i was right on that account, however, the glue skins over almost instantly. it was very difficult to work with. i was using a small artists brush, which worked sort of well. but because the glue skinned over so fast i finally, after filling the gaps, just brushed  a smear over the whole seam all around. after it dried i trimmed the excess, used a sanding stick to smooth it out and then buffed the seam using polycrystal, which is used to polish scratches out of acrylic watch crystals. it is not as pretty as i had hoped, but not totally gross either. i think if i had to do it again, i would try #3 first and finish with #16. thanks to howard for putting me on to a web page from the 1990's dealing with glues and sealers for acrylics like lexan. i probably would have used clear epoxy, other wise. it may have worked also. what do you other synchronisti's used to reseal when you rebuild or replace the cells? the whole project has been quite satisfying. peter
