In no particular order

1.To protect the watch from shock.

2.To protect the electronics from air and water.

3. To block corrosion from spreading in the unlikely event of a battery leak.
Although some potting compounds used contributed to internal short problems and then caused a battery to vent which never was supossed to happen unless they are overloaded. The epoxy on the 3M fiberglass electrical tape was found to eventualy short the board and then the batteries due to reacting with potting material durring curring. It took 1-3 years for this to even be discovered(by RWR).It was GE and the replacement Silicone they said would work as good as the one they discontinued. So GE is liable for many failed MK II and MK III Synchronars but never paid for it.This is why some MK II,s have corroded boards under the solar cell, right where the 3M insulating tape became conductive.

4. It acts like a temerature compensating device in that sudden temp changes outside don't have much effect on accuracy of the Quartz Crystal inside.Like a watch in a thermos if you will.
A Synchronar without gel inside has much more drift and is therefore less accurate.

5. It is a very good way to protect the watch from pressure as encountered at great depths. In fact all pressure is transferred to the parts inside and not on outer seals or the Case like that of a regular watch.
Membership status is unknown due to lack of communication.
