Hmm, sounds like you have bought a bad replica that someone cobbled together. If the solar cell is not connected it would remain in low intensity mode no matter what light condition and be difficult to see in bright light.
Also this most likely means it is not able to charge.

There doesn't seem to be an easy way to set the month on a MkI/II module. See this thread for tips:

I haven't set the date on my Sunwatch yet either.

i don't think there is an easy way to set the month. not only do you need to set the correct month, you need the right year of the leap year cycle to get feb 29. what i do is set the date to the last day of the month[whatever month is showing] and let the watch change at midnite to the first of the next month. reset the date to the last day of that month and let the watch reset at midnite. keep doing this until you get to the right month and set the date. if you want to set the leap year cycle, you need to keep doing this until with a reset of feb to 28th it changes to 29th at midnite. now you are on the leap year, feb 29. this year 2008 is a leap year. if you have the time to do it, you can also reset the time to 23:59 each time and wait 1 minute for the date to change. i found this to be toooo tedious. peter

The solar cells used now are much less brittle. It is diffucult to remove the old type without breaking them, mostly because of how much they cling to the Gel.

However, I strongly do not recomend installing them with the tiny factory wires. The ones i use and will list for sale at the market place section have larger (30 awg) tin coated copper wires(2 + in front,1 - in back) installed.

Just another Thursday to some, but Happy Thanksgiving to all.
