Synchronar charging

Post08 Dec 2008, 17:18

How much exposure to sunlight is needed to recharge a drained synchronar? Should I leave it on the window sill, or should anywhere round the home suffice.

I have the original instructions for a Synchronar 2100 Mark 111 which gives the recharge times as....

Bright sunlight: 10 hours.
Bright overcast sunlight: 20 hours.
Dark overcast sunlight: 50 hours.
The above through a window: Double to triple the time.
100 watt bulb at 5 inches: 30 hours.
60 watt bulb at 3.5 inches: 30 hours.
15 watt with reflector at 5 inches: 30 hours.
Fluorescent lamp: Useless for charging.

Hope this helps.

Remember these instructions are for the old Nicad batteries. So if it was made before 2002 the MK III instructions would still apply. Then again some have been rebuilt using similar Nicads.

8-10 inches to a 75- 100 watt bulb is close enough for 18 hours for the NIMH batteries used in Synchronars since 2002. 5 inches would be a little too hot for charging IMO. Figure About a 36% faster charge time than the MK III instructions for Nicads.

Do I understand correctly: the new NiMH charge faster than the old NiCd? So do the NiMH have less capacity than the NiCd?

Yes they charge faster, not sure exactly why.I guess being a different chemical make up.

The NIMH charge faster, are safer for the enviroment and have virtualy no charge memory effect like the Nicads.
The only + with the Nicads was that when fully charged they could still display the time briefly or atleast keep track of time after a whole year in a dark drawer. The NIMH self discharge and may only go 5-8 months in a dark drawer.

Is it safe to leave it outside it the hot sunlight ?? Can the watch withstand the heat???
I am worried that the heat will ruin the reed magnets...

I keep mine in a airtight container (like Tupperware) in a greenhouse all year round, keeps it charged, no problem.
