seiko lcd battery contacts

Post27 Nov 2010, 12:49

Hi All

I'm starting to stray into the realms of 70s LCDs and I picked up a cheap Seiko to have a play about with. First problem was an old (leaking) battery. Removed it and cleaned up the battery bay a bit.
Gold contacts are in perfect order, however they appear to be clipped or rivetted to copper (?) mini-posts and it is one of these (-ve) terminal that appers to have corroded to nothing (see pic).

Could this be repaired with a bob of solder perhaps. I have not yet stripped off the LCD display to look at the rest of teh guts but that
might be teh next step.

Suggestions ?

Cheers

James, I'm not nearly as experienced, but maybe you can try some solder paste followed by just a short touch with a hot iron. You could try a blob of solder, but clean whatever contacts are left and apply a tiny amount of rosin to help the solder flow. Either way I would be concerned with melting the plastic. You also might try conductive epoxy, but in my experience it's not mechanically very strong.

Try a small amount of conductive epoxy on the contact point and normal epoxy around that as there is sufficient amount of surface area to do this and will hopefully give you enough strength.

Thanks for the replies.

In the end I did manage to 'tin' that tiny exposed end by using a
copper wire tip round my iron. I then tinned the contact and managed to get them to stick. It ain't pretty and I did melt some
plastic in the process but I wasn't too concerned.

Having done that I checked that I was getting volts on teh other side which I was.

Sadly no joy from the watch and all the LCD driver connection points wereonly measuring .25 ish volts. I guess the IC was also nadgered by the battery leak. Ho humm
