which dsm?

Post05 Mar 2011, 17:51

hi.

ive been looking at the optel dsm, the one with the white numerals.

when buying a dsm, is there any pitfalls i should look out for?

which display is best? the one that flashes or the one that stays constantly on?

what battery do they use? what is the voltage? are they readily available?

kind regards.

None.....go for it!

Uses 1 x 357 battery, standard 1.55v, zillions to be had, eBay, stores etc.

Has to be the flashing display just because it looks so cool 8-)

I sent you a PM with photo's of the one I have for you to browse over.

My first one had flashing display, tried wearing it, but found it a bit annoying that at with a 50% chance when I glanced for the time the display was off - and in 80% of the other 50% the display reflected something bright (like the sky or a white ceiling) and wasn't readable as well.
I love DSM displays, but not for every day wear watches. Sharp did it well with their DSM calculators, they integrated a shade. Unfortunately they never made a scientific DSM calculator - if they had, it would definitely be my every day calculator instead of the TI SR-56.

Sorry to be a bit anal, but some of the DSMs took RW25 batteries........same as the early Pulsars. But you can certainly use a 357 with a spacer :-D

Pretty sure BWCs and Lucien Picards took these battery types.

This is the model in question, it came fitted with a single 357 battery which fits very well without the need for a spacer, I assume the original battery would of been the RW25?

The display is not always easy to read but I don't mind so much, I see it as more of a quirk than an annoyance, I find tilting the wrist to adjust the viewing angle makes it easier to read, I exchanged a few PM's with f.e.a.r and pointed this out to him prior to replying to his post but I agree it is a factor that has to be taken into consideration.

I don't see the flashing display as a problem, it flashes on and off quite quickly so if you happen to glance during an off period it's only a blink of the eye before it's back on.

It is not like you buy a watch like this as a daily beater no?
The legibility is thus simply as it is; a property of DSM.

Same like with any LED watch. The need to push the button is a bit of a pisser when seen as a daily wearer but a non issue for special occasion and simply a property of LED.

thanks all, especially bucko for all the pm help.

a choice was given to me by the seller, do i want a flashing display or the solid version? i know that the flashing module is the older of the two versions (a matter of months?) but i had to go with personal preference as i`m the one thats got to spend many hours looking at it.

solid display got my vote.

one dsm now ordered for one very happy chappy :-D

You are correct, the Optel is going to be worn in rotation with my other watches and left on display with the batteries removed when not in use, I tend to wear what takes my fancy on the day and very rarely wear the same watch on consecutive days.
I don't really have a daily wear but if I am doing DIY, gardening, gym work and the like I have a beat up Seiko 7132 which I use, this watch 'takes a kicking but it keeps a ticking'. :-D
