New Nixie watch

Post09 Jan 2012, 05:40

Received my Nixie tubes today!
So, in all enthusiasm, I made a picture of the tubes and afterwards
I decided to make a photoshop representation of how the watch will look like.
I think it's quite stunning, but I am always in for comments/remarks :-)

The watch should be ready in about 3 months or so.

wow nice..but whats the difference except the battery lifetime?

The only reason i did not buy the other was because it's way to big.
50 x 16.5 mm thick ...i don't know how big the other was..but.

i do like those nixies tubes, but it has to be wearable. I choose another strap..it's way to small in comparison of the case.

An idea..why not make the case rectangular..say 60 x 40 mm and 1.5thick..and with 2 small straps at each side.

Just idea's..keep it up..very nice project..love to see the finished project.

Looks very promissing Cobra.

I took your drawing and did some modifications of my own.
If you would like to see i can post a picture.
Perhaps you can use some of it in your final design.

Thanks guys. The Nixie watch from cathode corner is 55mm in diameter and 20mm thick. The strap is in fact the same size, so although their watch is bigger, they use the same strap.

Yes, I'd like to see your modified design Cesar. Ideas are most welcome!

Ha, the straps look interesting indeed! The battery is a different story because it won't fit there (it's 25mm long and 14.5mm in diameter).

I had been thinking about those LEDs too, but do you really want LEDs in a nixie watch? I can put them somewhere at the top I suppose. Let's think about that.

nice cesar..yes..i like those 2 straps to..maybe even a rectangular case.

so the battery is the culprit to make the watch smaller? Maybe a smaller battery a slimmer watch? 1 to 10 years is long. Who needs that with such a special watch..it's a conversation piece so putting new batts in it is always a fun day. :-D

Yes i figured the battery might not fit there..
Well there are small nixie like bulbs that look like leds...
but are of course not necessary.
I put them there to fill up the big black empty space...and still have a function.
Since it looked like the bottom strap was around a hinge,
and this could be a problem when using a double strap i placed the hinge on the side.
Kinda like how you close a preserving bottle, making it easy to swap the battery.

I think it's brilliant Cesar, you got eye for detail.
I just made the same composition to see if all the sizes are correct and if it really fits this way.
I can use 2 straps of 16mm rather than 1 strap 20mm.
It will look like this, which is nearly the same as what you showed me already.

I would really like to know other's opinions as well so please FIRE your comments on this.

Humm, my wife doesn't like the 2 strap option :-). I made a composition picture with 22 to 26mm straps compared to the 20mm from Cathode Corner.

What's best? I can only get the 22mm in military green, not the larger ones. As the watch will be olive drab, I prefer myself the military green band.

Well, and while we're in compare mode, let's compare the side as well.

Kopriso Nixie Watch vs Cathode Corner Nixie Watch.

Kopriso: 50mm dial; 16.5mm thick
Cathode Corner: 55mm dial; 20mm thick

Kopriso opens from the bottom; Cathode corner opens from the top.

If you're looking for larger (wider) straps, check out panatime.com. They carry straps from 20-26mm, in all sorts of styles.

Interesting redesign of the Nixie watch. I'm still waiting (hoping) Jeff Thomas finishes his Nixie2 design. I'm supposed to be on the short list for one. :-D

Hi guys, thanks for your comments.

What I would REALLY like to know is which size strap suits the watch best. My wife thinks the 24mm strap, I think I prefer the 22mm strap.

How about you??

The watch is not for sale yet, I first got to get all the basics right before I can start the production.

I saw those nixie clocks with the blue backlight LEDs, that looks fabulous! So I am going to experiment with that ans see if I can also backlight my nixies with blue leds.

Expect 3 months minus a few days :-)

My vote goes to the 22mm, looks most pleasing to my eyes. :-D

I definitely prefer the wider strap (i.e. 26mm).
I also prefer the black strap to the olive drab one.

I quite like having the circuitry visible in these watches, but I reckon having the battery right in between the Nixies is a bit distracting. Have you considered putting the battery in a black plastic sleeve or something ?

I agree with charger regarding the battery position and like the idea of having the batteries at the bottom as in Cesar's post, would it be possible to used a series of stacked 357 button cell batteries instead of the CR2 battery in order to facilitate this? I also think using LED's in the display makes a nice marriage of different technologies.

I love the idea of the display being motion activated and my vote would be for the 26mm strap.
