CompuChron Module Issue

Post16 Apr 2012, 05:00

Hello everyone,

I have a question as always. I had some trouble testing a CompuChron module today, and broke off one of the copper tabs. Can this be repaired by soldiering it back to the module where it came from? Here is the picture of the module...

Image

How easy is it to soldier back? I hope someone can answer this question, because I am a little desperate.

Also, I polished a Seiko "0662" crystal using: 600, 1500, 2000 and 2500 grade sandpaper + Novis polisher and finally finished off with a little Armor -All. Tell me what you think...

I realize there is no "before" and "after" photos, but I do like the results.

Thank you all.

Some of the Hughes modules came with contacts that clip in position and don't require soldering, if you could find one from an old module all you would need do is clean away the excess solder and clip the new one on - I am rubbish with a soldering iron and this is a work around solution that I have used previously myself.

Your board looks like one of the Hughes modules with the thru-board contacts- these have two small prongs on the end which poke through two holes to the solder side. This means you really need a donor module to give you a new unbroken contact. If you have one of these then resoldering not too difficult- clean back the silicone sealant a little to clear the pad (not all the way back to the cover), desolder and remove the old broken off pins using solder wick and tweezers, pop the new one in and as it is a Hughes module smear some extra flux (or solder cream) around the contact prongs, solder in place and clean up the excess flux.

I a also an Amateur with a Soldiering iron, and if this requires some precision from an experienced soldierer, I may have to pass on it.

Anyway, thank you all very much for the help.

Patrick,

I have no idea why I have a drawer full of contacts which look exactly the same as the one shown in your picture. I worked for Frontier Semiconductors in the '70's, but we never used metal contacts on our modules. We did have several ex-Hughes engineers that might have brought them in to for our mechanical engineers to take a look at, of course, just for ideas. I notice you live in CA. as I do. I would be more than happy to send you some for comparison. The one's I have are as described by Old Tom. If they are the correct ones you could send me your module and I can solder them in for you. PM me and we can work out the details.
