tweaking a nixie watch :)

Post19 Nov 2012, 00:46

After a few months waiting, my watch arrived from the other site of the world :-D Australia .. thx to Michel.

and i must admit...i really really like it :-D so it,s time to do some tweaking to make it even better :O`~

Here she is, straight from the Kaola,s and kangaroos :-D

Image

first we have to change the flat glass to some convex anti mirrored glass !

with plain glass

first get the module out and i made the inside of the case silver.

the new glass

after cutting the glass (it,s +3.00 dioptrie, just to magnify the nixies a bit)

now a bit of personalization :-D

Finish and comparison.

That looks fantastic Kasper!

How thick is that glass that you put there? I mean, the thickness of the glass itself, not the curve. How exactly did you manage to put it there? From the top or from the bottom side? I normally warm up the ring and then insert the glass from the top by stretching the ring bit by bit.

The result is amazing, I hope I can also work something out with a anti reflection coating, but I am dependent on other people :-)

Just one thing that comes to my mind, is the IR reflection sensor still working properly? I can imagine that the +3 lens has some influence on the IR light, which could be either a positive or a negative influence.

Great job Kasper, really love it and the little ghost sticker is very cool!! What kind of printer and paper do you use to print these? I normally order them through vistaprint but it takes about 10 days before I can receive them, so a home setup would be a good alternative.

Best regards,
Michel

the glass is 2 mm at the side and 3.4 mm in the middle. I could have taken a thinner glass but i wanted it to stick out a bit so it looked heavy :-D I just warmed the ring and pushed it in from the top.
I,m used to work that way in my profession. warm it up and push it in M:)W:)M

it makes no different for the ir-sensor. the only problem i see so far is that the batt sits a fraction higher in the middle then on the side..but you see it only when you look from the side to the watch.
i just printed it in high res on a standard epson printer/scanner with photopaper then i taped it to the back side off the batt.

the anti mirror glass is much better but difficult to see on the pictures.

Great job Casper.

Your making it harder for me to wait untill mine arrives.
But i'm a very patient man, and Michel sure made a nice nixie watch. :O`~

And ooh before i forget...wristshot??? *wink* ;-)
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.
The reason i collect watches is because it feels like i'm buying time.
