New around here, and an M159-5039

Post27 Jan 2013, 14:40

There was no way I was going to avoid being a watchnerd. I blame Herbert White. He was the jeweller in Frome, the town where I grew up in the 1970s/1980s. He was a wonderful chap, and was very happy indeed to be regaled with endless questions about watches by a young lad.

He was a lovely bloke - his son ran the shop most of the time, but Herbert would usually be around somewhere. He and I used to sing together in the local parish choir. He was an absolutely awesome tenor in his seventies, goodness knows how good he was in his prime. I would have guessed choosing the family business over a singing career was a tough call.

I remember he lent me a workshop service manual for one of the new digital LED watches that was just out - the massive two-cell, magnet-in-clasp-to-adjust Omega Time Computer 1. It had me absolutely captivated. I’ve got a bit of a guilty secret for quartz still... So I thought I'd pop in here.

The current collection isn't massive - as yet - although growing by the day. Mostly Seiko and Citizen from the 1980s. Here's one as a starter:

Welcome to the forum MMC :-)
That is a nice M159, it has a unique band configuration ,the lugs on the top and bottom are different.
I have not seen this in any other watch.
I'm guessing this is from 1977 , what is the number on the back ? you can tell the year by it.

Hi S&CLCDs,

Thanks for the welcome - it's much appreciated. Lots to learn, and this looks like a good place to do it!

The number's 760348 - does that help?

All bests,

M

It's from june 1977 ,MMC
Let me explain,
The first 7 = 1977 ,the second 6 means the month june (6th month)
This goes for all seiko watches, but you have to choose a decade.
With these digitals it's easy ,most are from the 1970's and 1980's.

Guilty as charged. Rural Oxfordshire, in a village called Bampton. It's where they film Downton Abbey if that's made it to your side of the pond yet?

Can't say i know about it, is it a feature film or tv series ?
Comedy or other ?

On topic now,
What other seiko's do you have ?

I'm sure you'll get it inflicted on you shortly :-D It's supposedly a period drama, but the plot clunks so much it's more like a comedy. There's more here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downton_Abbey

I'll have a proper rummage through the watch box, but currently the list is (with the exception of the beastie above):

- Breitling Aerospace Chronometre digi ana
- Seiko A939-5000 LCD
- Seiko M159-5029 LCD
- Seiko C359-5000 Calculator (but alas no stylus)
- Seiko A259-5050 LCD
- Citizen 8984 digi-ana

Really after an Omega TC1 and a couple of other Omega Seamaster digis, then there's the hunt for more Seiko Sports Quartz...

A great bunch MMC ,for me especially the seiko C359 and citizen 8984 :-D
I really like the citizen ana-digi's ,i have one too. A bit hard to set the time though.
The sports 100 line from seiko is very nice, very well worth collecting IMO.
