Competition; purchased, but no clue which model.. Help! ;)

Post07 Nov 2013, 22:26

This one is incoming. But to be honest, I have never seen this particular model before (also in this colourset). And I think ive seen a lót of Seiko models over the years..
It reminds me of the A128-5010 (same bracelet, same case shape), but obviously it has a different movement...

Off course I will keep you guys informed, and I will post a 'restore' picture after arrival..

Meanwhile, id like to know its movement and case number..

I'm thinking of an A914, considering the shape of the LCD panel.. (which would mean no battery leaking damage, and a long life lithium, together in a very rare case)

And, ah! The first person to bring me the correct model will receive two pusher spring washers for free! ;-)

Seems to be an A257, not sure of the case number as yours seems to have a more appropriate bracelet for the case design 5010. So i'll be interested to see.

EDIT: I was obviously not paying attention to what I typed Its a A927 as I have put in the link below, I dont know why I put A257, two out of three but in the wrong order. It must be Friday!

It's a A927, similar movement to the A939 only without the alarm, that can be read in the tech guide.
It's in the library ,only the band is different.

The band you have looks a lot like one from a A714-5009.
It's very similar, although i don't think it's the very same one, number wise.

I think you are the winner s&k lcds, pm me for two spring washers ;)

I found a set of pictures of George papay HERE

Image

Does anyone know this George Papay personally over here? He seems to sell NOS items only for extremely high prices on the bay, although sometimes im under the impression he is an outstanding restorer with a perfect set of tools and skills.
Once I was contacted by him under his 'buyer' ID on eBay when I was selling a NOS Casio world time. Forgot that ID though.

Oh so harsh referee, my link was to the correct watch I just typed the wrong calibre... such harsh rules :( Oh well stiff upper lip and all that.

George says he is in UK now but I was always under the impression he was elsewhere in Europe.

Well, where ever he lives, and despite his extreme prices, he has the best NOS-looking collection of Seiko's and Casio's ive seen sofar. Beside this, he makes brilliant pictures :amen:

Yep it's true, Adam was first ;-)
I read A257 in his post and later saw the link for the A927 in the same post.

I really dont mind I was just having fun. I have plenty of clips here but thank you for the offer. It was fun to join in.

George Papay does take stunning photographs, I must admit.

At the moment he has a Seiko Gold C153 for sale in NOS condition with original bracelet. I might be wrong be I am pretty certain its not the original bracelet(I have the same watch) for this watch and that of a D138-5040 (Z473). With his experience he should know its the wrong bracelet especially when he asks for so much money.

I totally agree with that. I also noted that on other watches he is selling as NOS where he states its having the original bracelet. That is also the reason why I believe he is an outstanding restorer (best tools, cutting his own crystals, and probably a laaaarge stockpile of NOS parts). Nevertheless, still outstanding looking watches, NOS or restored.
Personally I am often satisfied with an age matching Seiko SQ bracelet on a different Seiko model, sometimes I think they even make a better match on some occasions. But then just don't mention the bracelet as original to the watch.

Here is an example of a different case/bracelet combination; a Seiko A714 running man fitted on a Seiko A128-5010 bracelet (brushed, without its polished middle segments)
Personally I think its making a better match then the original.
Interesting is that the Seiko I started this topic about is having a similar bracelet as one of the original A714's (same design, might be another number)

This happens a lot with georgepapay.
All NOS watches, but about 5 out of 10 watches don't have there original bracelet. !@@!

Seicitizitch, i too thank you for your offer, but i also have plenty of clips as well.
But the gesture is very much appreciated. :-D

To be fair this model C153 is nearly impossible to find a perfect bracelet I have a near mint model and the bracelet is still not perfect from maybe a couple of wears. The plating is probably the worst I have seen on a Seiko. When I retrieve it from storage I post some shots and you 'll see how bad it is in comparison to the wear of the case.

Thats said, its easier just to be honest and say, 'it was a badly designed bracelet that doesnt survive well because of poor plating and I had to replace it with a near period Seiko piece'. Although the bracelet offered is five years older.

One final thing where is the bracelet if the watch case(only) is NOS(its not NOS if the case has been reworked). Even if its a salesmans piece, they usually came with part bracelets.

Ive looked up that C153 and in my opinion that watch was used. It looks practically as new, but I see small dents on the edge of the goldened keyboard panel. Also a small dent in the ss case upside left low corner.
Scratch on case back. Signs of opening the watch on the back side of the ss case in lower edge near the lug. Keyboard buttons look used, although in very good shape.
Crystal is plexi, so easy restorable, although it looks fine, cant say its polished.
Restored case, re-applied brush. Non-original bracelet.
And all of this for the stunning give-away price of just 1650 US dollars.

I also believe most of his pictures are sharpened and shopped, but that's just an idea that just popped in my head after scrutinizing some sets of pictures once more. But this is valid in my opinion (sharpening) although I wouldn't prefer doing it myself.

As you said well; don't sell non-nos as nos. Nevertheless stunning items.

And off course you two may contact me any time when you are short of those wicked spring washers ;-)
