It arrived today. With battery leakage, even though the owner assured me 'it will work'. But an interesting challenge, I haven't seen a movement of this build before.
The watch has a somewhat weird movement with a simple layout; a circuit with no soldered parts on it (apart from its chip)
All elements of the movement (the trimmer, the xtal, the light bulb, the + and the - contact, etc ) are loose (! never seen that before..) and fit in a recess in the casing shaped to that part
They are connected to the circuit by conductive barrel shaped rubber connectors of two diameters (one bigger, one smaller) and different lengths
Also the connectors on the sides (connecting to the pushers) are made of this stuff
Two of these connectors (of the minus contact) were destroyed by battery acid..
I cleaned all separate parts, removing all the corrosion (not much, just around the battery) and etched all contacts on the circuit
Eventually I soldered the trimmer and the + contact directly to the circuit, saving myself two intact connectors I could use for the minus contact points
Now the movement is working as supposed , including the light. Probably even more reliable as some connections are soldered now
The build quality of the case is equal to Seiko, Casio and Citizen; pushers with spring bars and good quality gaskets. The case back is screwed and also has a quality gasket. Marked inside 'Speidel Japan'
The movement is marked 'Speidel , manufactured in malaysia'
The movement features time, day (letters) and date, seconds and light.
I think the watch is of 1976, which is still pretty early, in the link below theres a Speidel complete with its box booklets etc (impressive and of high quality!) which probably features the same movement as mine;
http://www.ledwatches.net/photo-pages/speidel.htmAll in all I can say that its a beautiful watch of very good quality and I think more Speidel lcd's will follow in the future!
Unfortunately the beautiful Speidel bracelet is of the elastic kind without removable links and too large for my wrist
Here a picture of the end result. I fitted it with a good matching stainless bracelet which does fit my wrist. Although I still prefer the original :
