Synchronar build at own risk kits?

Post28 Apr 2006, 20:13

- On a serious note I have concluded there is a greater majority of potential Synchronar buyers on this forum who would prefer an economical BUILD IT YOURSELF KIT/ SYNCHRONAR REBUILD MODEL/HOBBYIST PROJECT.

The main thing I would need help with is what variations of the kit I should offer. With the top kit offered at $850, and a basic Kit(with SW case/no bar) including 2 modules/2NOS Lexan tops,Band and pins, slider switches and pins, extra magnets, one BN solar cell, reed switches,BN Quarts Crystal etc for $400??

All of the above is under consideration and has not yet become a goal of myself or colleagues.I agree that some attention should be given to some portion of the Vintage Sync,s that should be opened only if there are obvious visual signs of chemical reactions happening inside and someone has the time and want's the challange of saving one of these time capsules before it may otherwise be too late.It is Important to note that these re- assembled units would not be of authentic resale value as an original but still of decent value when made to work.
Most of my time will have to go to the current RWR LE series New Synchronar but I was interested in others oppinions on this Kit offering?
After all, putting these items in a box and shipping is ten times easier than the time and effort to make a New Watch.I would like to offer both Synchronar kits and the RWR LE official series to promote 1.RWR backlog funds.2 MK V R#D 3.RWR/ Synchronar History facts and or publications.

I like the kit idea too :) but I get the feeling we're talking building a synchronar from a box of bits, not just final assembly.

If you do sell the kit versions Synchroserious, will they come with comprehensive, user friendly, instructions, or will it strictly be something for the techies to work on?

Howard,

I like the idea. What would be the life expectancy of the batteries?

I think it is a good idea, depending on the skill and equipment involved. I would ask for some options of storage units and solar cells, and then switches.

Gentlemen, Thank you for the thoughts and interest.I do feel that if there is going to be a market for unofficial rebuilds,it should be done thru the family of the inventor with the experience, part's and willingness to inform and guide one in the right direction of the operation. There will be no guarantee or warranty and yes it will take miniature soldering experience and such equipment.Using caution in what your doing every step of the way would also be necessary. There is no exact Science for openning up one of these time capsules and getting guaranteed satisfaction with each module having a different seal and gel grip/tensile strength tendencies. One module may come apart rather easy without damage to anything while another may be quite dificult to open without severe damage to something, most often a trashed lexan top and or bottom is the only way in and you still have many cautions to deal with the rest of the way.So long story short I guess it would be as Abacus said FOR THE TECHIES.The reason each kit would come with the spare reeds/solar sell/lexan top is to overcome the risks as these are the top three parts in risk of damage just trying and prying to get inside.
It must also be understood that these BUILD AT YOUR OWN RISK KIT WATCHES will be permanently marked as non originals in the space where the otherwise 5 digit Sr# would be visible. Please understand this must be done without me explaining all the reasons. Most important it will distinguish originaly manufactured workmanship from the do it yourself units.
OTHER THING TO CONSIDER
Let,s assume all the people who have inquired about the kits allready had a WORKING ORIGINAL SYNCHRONAR , would you feel any different about my releaseing the kits?--damageing the rarety, quality control of the Synchronar and the inventors legacy? In other words I don't want this kit under consideration to backfire if someone has a bad experience and it will effect the trust in all the hard work I have put in to get the RWR LE new watches done.

Also I am not at liberty to disclose some of the trade secrets involved in the manufacture, like the manufacturer of the gel and what mix ratio as well as the potting process itself. So unless you experiment with your own gel you might as well leave the inside full of air pockets and just be carefull not to jar the watch into anything solid os swim with it like you could with a RIEHL SYNCHRONAR RWR LE. I will await feedback and thanks for the opinions thus far.

Hi Harold I am interested in purchasing a build at own risk kit . What does the lower priced kit come with in regards to case and type of module.
Thanks Sean

Hi.
The kit was an idea but considering the risks it seems it would be better if I(or a partner) made the watch as a retro rebuild MK I,II or III.
This would eliminate the gamble on your part of getting something that works and my reputation would not be hanging on your success either.

There really is a very limited amount of 100% working MK IV chips left. Then there is a fair amount with a slight glitch like no alarm,no stopwatch,no flashing displayed in the second zone or something simple like that.Chip logic wise these would be considered, speaking off the record here a MK 3.8 :) that I can also custom build at a lower price.

I know there was rummor spread about a "Mk IV and Half",which never exsisted on paper but was mentioned jokingly by RWR in a telephone conversation and that is where the heresay began. It basicly is referring to the improvements made outside of the chip.New improved batteries, metal plate on the bottom etc.If there were such a thing then the above model would be considered a MK 4.1
Sorry I do not have a price set on all the possibilities of the rebuild or slight flaw MkIV models.I am considering offering such models at ebay. Of course with detailed description of what the item is including any faults it may have.

You can contact me at riehl_synchronar_2100@yahoo.com

for detail or an order.
